The regional programme “Employment and Skills for Development in Africa” (E4D) aims at improving employment opportunities in Africa in cooperation with the private sector. The programme is co-funded by the BMZ, Norad, the EU, and implemented by GIZ. The programme develops, negotiates, and implements partnerships with the private sector that promote more productive and decent employment in different partner countries across Africa. E4D uses the GIZ integrated approach to employment promotion:
Knowledge, Skills & Competences
• Ability to express him/herself well in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Very good working knowledge of ITC technologies, related software, and computer applications (e.g., MS Office).
• Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed.
• Good stakeholder engagement skills (government, local authorities, communities, CSOs, etc.).
• Gender awareness about issues surrounding renewable energy and energy efficiency.
• Good time management.
• Strong social, communicative, organizational, teambuilding and intercultural skills.
• Knowledge of event management
• Basic knowledge of design and video editing
• Basic knowledge of and/or experience in green economy or women’s economic empowerment both of the following areas is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
The Communications Specialist will be in charge of:
• Engaging in general day to day tasks e.g communications support, social media engagement, media monitoring, writing, and editing, proof reading and events management
• Contributing to the development, implementation and monitoring and evaluation of a programme communications, PR, and KM strategy
• Implementing KM activities, i.e., supporting the different projects and service departments in information gathering, storage and retrieval to support general awareness of the existance of different information sets, foster easy and timely access to existing materials, and reduce on duplication and increase efficiency
The Communications Specialist performs the following tasks
Specific Tasks
Media work
• Organize and/or coordinate project’s/programme’s press activities remotely and on site, in cooperation with local partners.
• Address press queries in consultation with programme management.
• Write and distribute press releases, in collaboration with the implementing partner’s Communications and PR office.
• Collect and/or prepare press kits for specific events.
• Undertake post-event media monitoring (i.e., collecting and review of media clips related to programme/project work, to assess reach, effectiveness, content quality and quantity, among others).
Communications & PR work
• Implement standards and guidelines for GIZ communication work.
• Strongly support development and subsequent implementation of the Programme’s Communications, KM and PR strategy.
• Work with technical officers to develop/update suitable communication materials (e.g. programme/project descriptions on the GIZ website, brochures, flyers, factsheets, banners etc.) in line with existing GIZ corporate design guidelines.
• Quality check all programme and project communication materials.
• Organise publicity/promotional events in collaboration with cluster technical teams.
Internal communications and knowledge management.
• Actively support in generating content for internal publications, channels or activities aiming to improve information exchange and collaboration. (e.g., emails, cluster newsletters, GIZ sector newsletters, etc).
• Contribute to the development, communication, and implementation of a MECKI department annual plan.
• Undertake knowledge management tasks such as factsheet version control, photo archiving, regular sharing of relevant information to all stakeholders, maintenance/ organization of the department MS Teams Channel, and related channels, and management of leftover communication and PR publication stock.
• Organize internal events of the cluster, sometimes in collaboration with its implementing partner, MEMD.
• Cooperation and participation in GIZ’s corporate communication network.
• Advise / support staff, partners, and consultants, on GIZ corporate design policy and strategy
Other Duties/Additional Tasks
• Support commissions to identify and budget for communication activities
• Creation, assurance, and coordination of a quality pool of service providers (e.g. communications consultants, printers, graphic designers, proof-readers, copy writers and sector -focused journalists, etc.)
• Keep up-to-date and informed on the developments and communication needs of the different commissioning parties.
• Performs other duties and tasks at the request of management
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Communications and Public Relations, marketing, or any related field.
• Master’s degree in related field is an added advantage
Details of experience
• 4-5 years of professional experience in the field of communications (media and PR work, events management, and internal communication).
• Experience in strategic communication planning, implementation, budgeting, and strategy monitoring and evaluation.
• Experience in knowledge management.
• Proven experience in content/media development, writing and/or editorial work and social media.
• Experience in supervising production and quality of communication products and tools.
• Experience in press and media management and monitoring.
