Project Overview and Role:
The Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) is a 7-year and €114 million programme funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs that aims to create a prosperous future for 230,000 young women and men in the Middle East, North Africa, Sahel & West Africa and Horn of Africa regions. The Fund will be supporting initiatives in 23 focus countries that will offer youth, in particular young women, opportunities for work that is demand-driven and productive, offering a stable income and safe working conditions, and that is contributing to their personal development and social protection.

Private sector, civil society and knowledge institutions will be invited to submit proposals geared to scalable solutions for creating more and better jobs and income generating opportunities for youth. Solutions will in particular focus on an integrated approach that addresses the shortcomings on the demand side (jobs) and supply side (skills) and bridging the mismatch between these two in the labour market.

Our key implementing partner in Uganda – Marula Proteen requires a consultant to work closely with their finance team in Kampala, Uganda, instilling a deep and practical understanding of key financial management tools and processes, practical skills in accounting and bookkeeping, and proficiency in financial reporting and analysis. The coach will also facilitate the effective use of financial tools and software and aid in improving the decision-making processes through financial projections and cost control.

Assignment Overview:
The Financial Management Coach will take on the crucial role of supporting CFYE’s key implementing partner in Uganda – Marula Proteen in strengthening and enhancing the financial management capabilities of their existing finance team. They will deliver comprehensive and hands-on training in areas like accounting, bookkeeping, financial reporting, cost control, decision making, and projections. This role demands an individual who is well-versed in modern financial management tools and software, unit economic analysis, cost reduction analysis, and in financial models and forecasting and who is capable of translating their knowledge into practical skills and understanding for our team. Through their coaching, they will enable our team to contribute more effectively to our mission and goals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
As a consultant you will be expected to support Marula Proteen to strengthen and enhance the financial management capabilities of their existing finance team, by delivering comprehensive and hands-on training in areas of accounting, bookkeeping, financial reporting, cost control, decision making, and financial projections.
To achieve this overall objective, the activities under this scope of work will include:
• Conduct an initial rapid assessment of the organization’s and team's capabilities in line with the focus of this consultancy and identify areas for improvement.
• Develop and implement a comprehensive coaching and training plan to address these areas.
• Work with the finance team at Marula Proteen and support them to review their existing financial management approach and systems, with a strong focus on setting up revised finance and accounting tools that will be developed during this consultancy.
• Set up and provide training and coaching in key areas including:
1. Financial Models and Forecasting: The consultant will set up (or improve) current systems establishing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow analysis and related modelling and forecasting.
2. Unit economics analysis: The consultant should set up a sustainable usable system to conduct analysis in areas such as but not limited to revenue per unit, cost per unit, gross margin per unit, customer acquisition cost, customer lifetime value, customer churn rate, etc
3. Cost reduction analysis: The consultant will set up a system to conduct analysis in areas of expense review and analysis, staffing and labour costs, identification of cost drivers, budgeting and forecasting, fixed and variable costs.
• Provide training and coaching to the finance- and management teams to facilitate their understanding and usage of relevant financial management tools and software designed for sound financial management, reporting and decision making. This should be in the form of hands-on coaching in accounting, book-keeping, financial reporting, and cost control.
• Monitor progress and make necessary adjustments to the training plan.
• Deliverables:
• An initial rapid assessment report identifying areas of improvement in the financial team's capabilities in line with the needs and goals of this scope of work.
• A comprehensive training plan tailored to the team's needs.
• A comprehensive training and follow-up coaching trajectory implemented, leading to a well-trained financial team competent in accounting, book-keeping, financial reporting, cost control, decision making, and projections.
• A final report on the training provided, improvements made, and recommendations for future improvements.

Operational Arrangements:
Consultant will report to the CFYE Country Lead in Uganda on CFYE contractual issues (including contract financial issues). For the implementation of the assignment itself you will work with and report to the the (financial) management of Marula Proteen and primarily operate from their office in Bugolobi, Kampala. This is a hands-on role that requires direct interaction with the Marula Proteen finance team for effective coaching. Occasional remote assistance may be permitted only when necessary.

Level of Effort and Reporting:

The consultancy is expected to last approximately 6 months, starting in September 2023 until February 2024 spread across key critical financial reporting cycles of Marula Proteen. The consultant will be responsible for submitting periodic progress reports and a final comprehensive report at the end of the consultancy period to both CFYE and Marula Proteen

Required Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
1. Relevant experience in financial management in a business (preferably SME) setting.
2. Prior experience in a similar coaching or training role towards Ugandan SMEs.
3. Sufficient seniority to advise the company’s management on overall financial strategy
4. Proficiency in financial management software, specifically QuickBooks.
5. Strong understanding of accounting and bookkeeping practices.
6. Must have the right to work in Uganda.

Core Competencies:
1. Hands-on mentality, rather a doer than a thinker.
2. Excellent communication and teaching skills.
3. Ability to translate complex financial concepts into easily understandable content.
4. Comfortable with building up systems in small teams.
