Background information about the job or company

To operate and monitor the corrugator’s computerised control system, ensuring that production orders, machine settings and process parameters are accurately entered and maintained for the safe, efficient and consistent production of corrugated board.

The operator will coordinate closely with the Corrugator Supervisor, wet-end operators, dry-end operators, Quality Assurance and Maintenance teams.

Responsibilities or duties

Control Room Operations

  • Operate the corrugator’s central control system, human-machine interface and production-management software.
  • Receive, verify and accurately enter production orders, board specifications and machine settings.
  • Select and load the correct production recipes for paper combinations, flute profiles, board dimensions and order quantities.
  • Monitor the complete corrugator line from the control room and maintain synchronisation between the wet end and dry end.
  • Control and monitor machine speed, paper tension, steam pressure, temperatures, adhesive application and production sequence.
  • Initiate, adjust and stop equipment in accordance with authorised operating procedures.
  • Coordinate job changeovers and ensure the correct orders are produced in the approved sequence.

Process Monitoring and Control

  • Continuously monitor machine displays, alarms, sensors and operating trends.
  • Identify abnormal operating conditions and take timely corrective action within the operator’s authority.
  • Immediately communicate mechanical, electrical, control-system, steam or quality problems to the supervisor and Maintenance team.
  • Monitor paper-roll changes, splicing, flute formation, bonding, board alignment, slitting, scoring and cutting.
  • Help maintain stable process conditions to prevent warp, delamination, crushed flutes, poor bonding and dimensional inaccuracies.
  • Confirm that operating adjustments are implemented safely and produce the required result.

Production and Quality Assurance

  • Confirm production orders against the approved job card before starting each run.
  • Ensure correct paper grades, reel widths, flute profiles, board combinations and dimensions are selected.
  • Coordinate with the Quality Assurance team during startup and throughout the production run.
  • Record and communicate production deviations, quality defects and corrective actions.
  • Stop or hold production when serious quality or safety issues are identified, in accordance with company procedures.
  • Support the segregation and reporting of non-conforming material.

Order and Material Coordination

  • Monitor the progress and completion of each production order.
  • Track production quantities, balance quantities, waste and incomplete orders.
  • Coordinate with the reel store and corrugator crew to ensure the correct paper reels are available for upcoming jobs.
  • Alert the supervisor to material shortages, incorrect paper specifications or scheduling conflicts.
  • Help optimise order sequencing to reduce paper changes, setup time and waste.

Safety and Equipment Protection

  • Follow all machine-operating, occupational health and safety procedures.
  • Monitor the status of machine guards, emergency stops, alarms and interlocks.
  • Never override or bypass safety devices or authorised machine parameters.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment abnormalities and near misses.
  • Follow approved shutdown, isolation and restart procedures.
  • Maintain an orderly and controlled control-room environment.

Record Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate electronic and manual production records.
  • Record machine speed, output, downtime, waste, stoppages, alarms and quality issues.
  • Document changes made to production recipes and operating parameters.
  • Provide complete and accurate information during shift handovers.
  • Support the preparation of daily production and machine-performance reports.

  • Training in corrugator operations, programmable logic controllers, industrial automation or production-control systems is an advantage.
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to operate industrial control interfaces.

  • At least three to five years’ experience operating the control system of an automated corrugator line.
  • Experience in a corrugated packaging, paper-converting or related manufacturing plant.
  • Hands-on experience using HMI, PLC-based or computerised production-control systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of wet-end and dry-end corrugator operations.
