Background

Pulse Lab Kampala https://www.unglobalpulse.org/lab/kampala/) is part of a network called UN Global Pulse https://www.unglobalpulse.org) with other Labs in New York, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Helsinki in Finland. In Uganda Pulse Lab Kampala operates under the leadership of the UN Resident Coordinator. Established in 2009, UN Global Pulse (UNGP) is an initiative of the Executive Office of Secretary-General (EOSG) with a globally distributed team in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. In support of the Secretary-General’s priorities, and in advancement of the UN Charter, Global Pulse serves as a cross-pillar lead and hub for experimentation and digital innovation.
UN Global Pulse works with digital innovation, real-time data, and artificial intelligence to further sustainable development, humanitarian and peace outcomes. UNP’s vision is ‘A world in which responsible and inclusive digital innovation serves to empower people and protect the planet’. Our mission is to work at the intersection of digital innovation and science to inform, inspire and support the entire UN and those it serves, to anticipate and respond to the challenges of today and tomorrow. The goals of UNGP are: i) to generate knowledge, capabilities and approaches that support the transformation of the United Nations into a more agile and resilient ‘next-generation’ institution; ii) to create and accelerate the development of globally accessible approaches that help communities and partners anticipate and address emerging global challenges; and iii) to advocate for the global transformation of policies, practices and culture required to maximize the impact of digital innovation, minimize its risk of harm, and ensure pathways to scale and sustainability.
Scope of Work
The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and benefit from rich interaction with experts in different fields, including development, data analysis and visualization, technology and communications. Throughout the internship, the intern will be involved in different aspects of the project.
The Intern-data analyst will work closely with the data science specialist to support Global Pulse’s overall data mining, analysis and visualization activities. The internship will provide an excellent opportunity to learn about the applications of new data sources and artificial intelligence technology to support the SDGs Agenda 2030, as well as to understand communications inside large international organizations like the UN system.

Duties and Responsibilities
These responsibilities include, but are not limited to support of the following activities:
• Assist in the implementation of data innovation. Projects using the big data, digital data and neural networks to achieve SDGs
• Support in performing data cleaning with variety of data sources
• Support exploratory research with IT components and new data sources for sustainable development and humanitarian action
• Support the implementation of system for data streams and analysis
• Provide creative inputs to visualise and report data findings in a variety format
• Assist the team in the development of platforms for making available tools developed by the Lab and partners
• Support the implementation of GIS-based tools for sustainable development
• Assist in the production of the interactive data visualizations and user interaction environments
• Support the Labs activities under projects as required

• Support and act in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position
• Be fluent in English and the working language of the duty station
• Have prior experience in data collection and analysis in the field of social or economic development fields;
• Have knowledge of statistical software like R/SPSS/STATA;
• Have good command in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as handling web-based applications.

Required Skills and Experience
• Applicants to the UNDP internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
• Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher) in computer science, Electrical engineering, Mathematics, Statistics.
• Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, Electrical engineering, Mathematics, Statistics.
• Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
• Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this program.
