The Driver will provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services that are critical to the operational success of BAMA Foundation’s programs. This role is essential for ensuring staff, visitors, and vital project supplies can reach remote health facilities and communities safely and on time. The Driver is responsible for the professional operation and diligent maintenance of the assigned project vehicle, strict adherence to all safety and organizational policies, and contributing to a secure and productive work environment.

Responsibilities or duties

a) Safe Transportation and Field Logistics

  • Drive BAMA Foundation vehicles to safely transport staff, consultants, and partners to project sites, meetings, and official assignments across often challenging rural and upcountry terrain.
  • Ensure the safe and timely delivery and collection of project documents, medical supplies, equipment, and other materials essential for field activities.
  • Plan the most efficient and safest travel routes, accounting for road conditions, weather, and security considerations.

b) Vehicle Care, Maintenance, and Safety Compliance

  • Conduct daily pre-trip inspections (checking fuel, oil, water, brakes, tires, lights) and ensure the assigned vehicle is clean, roadworthy, and in excellent mechanical condition at all times.
  • Ensure routine servicing and repairs are performed promptly as per the maintenance schedule. Report any mechanical defects, accidents, or damage to the supervisor immediately.
  • Observe all Ugandan traffic laws and road safety regulations meticulously. Enforce seatbelt use and safe conduct for all passengers.
  • Maintain a valid Ugandan driving permit (Class B minimum) and any other required certifications.

c) Fleet Management, Documentation, and Accountability

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and complete vehicle logbooks, detailing all trips, mileage, destinations, and purpose.
  • Manage fuel consumption records and accountability in strict accordance with BAMA Foundation’s fleet management policies.
  • Ensure the security of the vehicle and its contents at all times, including during overnight stays in the field.
  • Assist with basic loading, unloading, and verification of project cargo.

d) Professional Conduct and Team Support

  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality. Represent BAMA positively in all interactions with communities, health workers, and partners.
  • Adhere strictly to BAMA’s Code of Conduct, Safeguarding Policy, and Safety & Security guidelines.
  • Provide flexible support to the team, including occasional assistance with basic administrative or logistical tasks when not driving, as requested by the supervisor.
  • Perform any other transport-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent.
  • A valid Ugandan driving permit (Class B, CM, or DL is required). A defensive driving certificate is a significant advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years of verifiable professional driving experience.
  • Experience driving for an NGO, INGO, or within the health sector is highly preferred.
  • Must have extensive demonstrated experience navigating rural and upcountry roads in Uganda.

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Exceptional defensive driving skills and in-depth knowledge of Ugandan road networks and regulations.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge to perform routine checks and identify potential vehicle faults.
