The Environmental, Occupational Safety and Health (EOSH) Officer shall be responsible for promoting and maintaining a safe, healthy, and environmentally compliant workplace in accordance with company policies, industry best practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
Responsibilities or duties
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Occupational Safety and Health Management
- Implement and monitor Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) policies, procedures, and programs.
- Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, company regulations, and legal requirements.
- Monitor the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and enforce safety rules at all times.
- Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses and prepare detailed reports with corrective and preventive measures.
Environmental Management
- Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations, permits, and company environmental policies.
- Conduct environmental inspections and audits of mining, quarry, plant, and office operations.
- Monitor waste management, dust control, noise levels, water usage, and pollution prevention measures.
- Support environmental impact mitigation and rehabilitation activities.
- Prepare environmental compliance reports for management and regulatory authorities.
Risk Assessment and Control
- Conduct risk assessments and Job Safety Analyses (JSA) for operational activities.
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Develop and monitor implementation of risk mitigation plans.
- Maintain hazard registers and safety records.
Training and Awareness
- Organize and conduct safety inductions for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Facilitate regular safety training, toolbox talks, emergency drills, and awareness campaigns.
- Promote a positive safety culture across the organization.
- Ensure employees understand and comply with environmental and safety requirements.
Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
- Coordinate emergency drills and evacuation exercises.
- Ensure firefighting equipment, first aid kits, and emergency facilities are available and functional.
- Participate in emergency response activities and incident management.
Compliance and Reporting
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Environmental Laws, Mining Regulations, and other applicable legislation.
- Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and annual EOSH reports.
- Maintain records of inspections, incidents, training, audits, and corrective actions.
- Liaise with government regulators, auditors, and other stakeholders on EOSH matters.
Contractor and Site Safety Management
- Monitor contractor compliance with company EOSH standards and procedures.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections of contractor activities.
- Ensure all contractors and visitors comply with site safety requirements.
Continuous Improvement
- Participate in the development and review of EOSH policies and procedures.
- Recommend initiatives to improve workplace safety, health, and environmental performance.
- Support the achievement of company EOSH objectives and key performance indicators.
Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Engineering, Safety Engineering, Public Health, Natural Resources Management, or a related field.
- Professional certification in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH, IOSH, OSHA, or equivalent) is an added advantage.
- Minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in mining, quarrying, manufacturing, construction, or heavy industry.
- Knowledge of environmental management systems and occupational health and safety standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and report writing.
Key Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health legislation and environmental regulations.
- Excellent risk assessment and incident investigation skills.
- Strong communication, training, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in remote and demanding environments.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and commitment to safety.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
