About planetGOLD Uganda
The planetGOLD Uganda project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). In Uganda, IMPACT is the executing agency, in partnership with Uganda’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and the country’s Directorate of Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM).
The project will work together with local communities to reduce the use of mercury in artisanal and smallscale gold mining—the world’s largest source of anthropogenic emissions of mercury pollution— while improving the health and lives of local mining communities. Environmental Officer
The Environmental Officersupports implementation of environmental-focused activities to be carried out as part of the planetGOLD Uganda project. Working closely with the Project Manager and other colleagues in the project’s management unit (PMU), the Environmental Officer will work with a number of stakeholders to carry out sensitization on mercury reduction in the ASGM sector and support uptake and adoption of practices and technologies that serve to reduce and eliminate the use of mercury in the ASGM sector.
Under the supervision of the planetGOLD Uganda Project Manager, the Environmental Officer has the following primary responsibilities:

Participate in Activity Planning & Execution (60%)

1. Participate in activity planning and execution of assigned activities (i.e. those related to mercury sensitization, reduction and elimination).
2. Support processes to confirm target sites for interventions.
3. Support processes to identify project partners for specified activities (e.g. develop ToRs).
4. Liaise with project stakeholders (e.g. miners, traders, community leaders, etc.) as needed with respect to planned activities, logistical arrangements, etc.
5. Collaborate with other members of the PMU with respect to communications needs for activities, streamlining of the project’s gender action plan and stakeholder engagement plan, procurement and logistics coordinator, or other.
6. Ensure proper tracking of the necessary (gender-disaggregated) information related to activity implementation that is required for donor reporting and monitoring and evaluation, in close collaboration with the Training and Sensitization Coordinator.

Stakeholder Engagement (30%)
1. Respond to requests for information by project beneficiaries and stakeholders, as well as potential new stakeholders, especially in relation to mercury sensitization, reduction and elimination.
2. Support the Project Manager and the Events and Meeting Coordinator with planning and execution of relevant stakeholder engagement activities, as needed (e.g. National Workshop) – especially with respect to promoting women’s full and effective participation.
3. Present progress and learnings regarding specific activities to various stakeholders, such as during project steering committee meetings or annual workshops.

Communications (10%)
1. Proactively share information related to activity implementation with the Communications Manager.
2. Respond to targeted information requests from the Communications Manager in support of the development of specific communications and knowledge-sharing products.
3. Provide guidance to the Communications Manager and any communications consultants for the project on how to best communicate effectively with women beneficiaries and stakeholders.
4. Coordinate direct communication between the Communications Manager and project beneficiaries, where needed.
5. Candidates are asked to clearly demonstrate in their applications how they meet the requirements of the position.

Qualifications
The successful candidate MUST have the following experience and skills:

1. Minimum 5 years of experience working in the environment or conservation sector, international development sector, or similar
2. Fluently in English; knowledge of other languages spoken in Uganda is considered an asset
3. Demonstrated experience with environmental management, sensitization on environmental issues, engagement with communities to address environmental concerns, or other comparable experience
4. Bachelor’s degree in Environment studies, Environmental Engineering, Development Studies, Social Sciences and Geological Sciences or related area of study.
5. Strong Microsoft office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
6. Experience in monitoring and evaluation and/or communications is an asset
