Earths Work LLC is seeking a Forestry/Ecology Manager to lead ecological assessments and forest carbon inventories for large-scale nature-based carbon projects (REDD+, reforestation, agroforestry) in Uganda. This role is critical for ensuring scientific accuracy in carbon stock measurements, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management practices. You will work closely with carbon methodology experts, GIS specialists, and local communities to deliver high-integrity projects that align with Verra VCS, Gold Standard, and CCB requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct field-based forest carbon inventories using IPCC Tier 2/3 methodologies.
- Estimate baseline carbon stocks and project-level sequestration potential.
- Assess biodiversity impacts and ensure projects meet Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards.
- Design and implement long-term forest monitoring programs to track carbon stock changes.
- Prepare technical reports for carbon project validation (e.g., PDDs, monitoring plans).
- Collaborate with remote sensing teams to ground-truth satellite data (LiDAR, Sentinel).
- Advise on sustainable forestry practices to maximize carbon sequestration and community benefits.
- Identify and mitigate risks (e.g., deforestation drivers, invasive species).
- Train local teams on forest inventory protocols and data collection.
- Support community engagement teams in explaining ecological benefits of carbon projects.
Required Expertise & Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in forest carbon projects, tropical ecology, or sustainable forest management.
- Proven expertise in
- 1) Forest inventory techniques (permanent sample plots, biomass equations),
- 2) Biodiversity assessments (flora/fauna surveys, habitat mapping),
- 3) Uganda’s/Sub-Sahara forest ecosystems (e.g., tropical rainforests, woodlands, mangroves).
- Familiarity with carbon standards (VCS, Gold Standard, CCB) is a plus.
Education & Certifications
- Master’s or PhD in Forestry, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related fields.
- Certifications in forest carbon accounting or biodiversity conservation (e.g., CFCC, FSC) are advantageous.
- Examples of past carbon project documents (e.g., forest inventory reports, biodiversity assessments), if available.
Required Competencies
- Ensures accuracy in data collection and reporting.
- Addresses ecological challenges (e.g., degraded land restoration).
- Works effectively with scientists, communities, and policymakers.
- Thrives in rugged field conditions and dynamic project environments.
