Informational Technology Technician at UN Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE)UN Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE)

The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides operational support, advisory services, and solutions to entities across the Secretariat. The Regional Service Centre in Entebbe, Uganda (RSCE), established in July 2010, offers efficient, client-oriented services including human resources, finance, transport, and ICT support.

These positions are in the Regional Field Technology Service (RFTS) at RSCE. The incumbents will report to the Supervisor of the ICT Operations Unit.

Under the supervision of the ICT Officer / Network Engineer, the IC/IT Technicians will:

Structured Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Cabling:

  • Install, test, label, document, and maintain structured cabling systems (copper and fiber optic).
  • Mount wall outlets, patch panels, fiber enclosures, and network racks.
  • Route and secure cables through trays, conduits, and risers; manage cable dressing and labeling.
  • Test installed cabling systems using certified tools (e.g., Fluke tester) and provide certification reports.
  • Produce As-Built drawings (using Visio or CAD) and update cabling records.
  • Diagnose and repair faults; perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate with building managers, contractors, and ICT colleagues; ensure compliance with health and safety standards.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Design and install telecommunications infrastructure for voice, data, and video systems.
  • Execute LAN wiring projects, including fiber optic splicing and connectivity.
  • Install PVC trunking, voice/data outlets, boxes, and faceplates; perform finishing work.
  • Manage and label patch cords in racks and at workstations.
  • Troubleshoot and repair damaged fiber ring cables and uplinks.

Grounding, Bonding, and Lightning Protection:

  • Measure and record grounding resistance; ensure it meets standards (<5 ohms).
  • Prepare grounding earth pits and redo grounding as needed.
  • Install discharge points in manholes using copper ground rods.
  • Interconnect all ground electrode systems.

Other Duties:

  • Support UPS and battery bank replacement, rigging, PMP installation, and physical security camera maintenance.

Six (06) months

Result of Service

The work ensures seamless connectivity, IT, and telecommunications services for the UN Entebbe Campus, with high-quality deliverables meeting agreed standards.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: At least one (1) year in ICT infrastructure; hands-on experience with structured cabling, fiber splicing, grounding, etc.
  • Skills: Proficiency in using fiber splicing machines and LAN installation tools; familiarity with Microsoft 365 suite desirable.
  • Desirable: Experience in UN Peacekeeping or similar international organizations; technical certification in ICT/Electrical Engineering; valid rigger’s certificate; vocational training.

Language

  • Required: Fluency in English (oral and written).
  • Desirable: Knowledge of French.

  • Consultants/Individual Contractors cannot apply for certain positions within six months of their current service.
