Role Context
The Lecturer in Physics delivers foundational and advanced physics courses, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a deep appreciation for the fundamental laws governing the physical universe among students. Reports to the Head of Department, Science Education.
Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree or Master’s Degree with at least 3 years of teaching experience in Physics or a related field such as Applied Physics, Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics, or Materials Science.
- Practical experience in physics research, laboratory experimentation, or computational modelling.
Personal Competencies
- Passion for physics and the ability to inspire students through clear, engaging, and interactive teaching methods.
- Strong laboratory and technical skills, including proficiency in modern physics equipment, data analysis tools, and safety protocols.
- Alignment with Christian values, emphasizing the integration of faith and science, ethical conduct in research, stewardship of creation, and the responsible use of scientific knowledge.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills for delivering lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and student mentoring.
- Commitment to inclusive education and supporting diverse learners in STEM disciplines.
- Adaptability to integrate theoretical concepts with practical applications and emerging topics such as renewable energy, quantum technologies, climate physics, and computational modelling.
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate physics courses through lectures, tutorials, problem-solving sessions, and laboratory practicals.
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments, including preparation of materials, demonstration of techniques, and supervision of student work.
- Develop course syllabi, teaching materials, assessments (exams, assignments, projects, and reports), and provide timely grading with constructive feedback.
- Hold office hours, offer academic advising, and mentor students on research projects or career pathways in physics and related sciences.
- Incorporate ethical and faith-based discussions on the wonders of creation, stewardship of natural resources, and the application of physics to real-world challenges relevant to African contexts, such as energy access, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation.
- Contribute to curriculum development, program evaluation, and enhancement of practical skills to improve student employability in STEM fields.
- Participate in departmental activities, including seminars, committees, outreach programmes, and initiatives promoting science education.
- Engage in continuous professional development to remain current with advancements in physics and innovative pedagogical approaches.
- Maintain safe, inclusive, and well-equipped laboratory and classroom environments that reflect the university’s values of integrity, excellence, service, and respect for God’s creation.
