JOB DETAILS:
DUTY STATION: C-CARE IHK
DEPARTMENT: MATERNITY
POSITION: REGISTERED MIDWIFE
REPORTS TO: HON, BM
INTERFACES WITH: Patient/Clients, and other MDT members

OVERALL JOB PURPOSE
• Provide a safe environment for patient care, involve self in establishing and maintaining standards of practice as per IMC requirement and ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team.

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
• Registered with the Ugandan Nurses and Midwives Council & holds current practicing license for Nursing.
• One year working experience as a midwife, (desirable).
• Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Excellent verbal and written skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with all the multi-disciplinary team, patients and relatives.

GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
• Be punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts
• Attend unit hand-over
• Act always in such a manner to promote and safeguard the interest and well being of patients and clients
Perform all nursing duties in accordance with the UNMC RM levels while adhering to all IMC policies & procedures
• Perform routine nursing care to assigned patients, always giving a complete and thorough report on patient status at end of shift/assignment.
• Consult and coordinate with the health care team members patient care plan for the day.
• Communicating effectively with the MDT, patients/clients and their relatives and friends
• Role modelling excellence in nursing practice, sharing a broad base of clinical nursing knowledge and contributing to the development and maintenance of standards of practice within IMC.
• Accept responsibility for own professional development and consistently seek educational tools in order to broaden knowledge base of various age groups, diseases and best practices.
• Maintenance of a safe and acceptable environment for patients and staff and taking appropriate action to ensure this
• Reporting incidents/ accidents/ complaints to the nurse in charge. Be familiar with the incident report form and complete the process
• Act in a supportive role to the Senior Staff nurse/in charge and to accept appropriate delegated responsibilities.
• Contribute to an active learning environment by teaching, supervising and facilitating staff
• Any other duties that may from time to time be assigned.
• Safely administer drugs following the IMC policy on drug administration.
• Operate medical equipment’s such as suctioning, oxygen administration, cardiac monitors etc
• Wear appropriate & accepted uniform as per IMC nurses’ uniform policy.

Specific Job Responsibilities
Job Reference:
1. Provide direct patient care, administering treatment as prescribed and taking vital signs.
2. Monitor patient progress and identifies any changes in status, acting on those changes to insure patient comfort and safety.
2. Record and report any labor abnormalities found in your assessment.
3. Effectively run the ANC & keep records as appropriate
4. Ensure that each mother has an obstetrics or gynaecology assessment tool in their file as per IMC guidelines.
5. Maintain accurate, detailed reports and records by documenting as per IMC standards
6. Provide patient teaching and families according to plan of care
7. Carry out family planning services as schedule
8. Directly work with the in-house doctor/specialist and ensure that patient has been reviewed and new instructions promptly followed.
10. Monitor all aspects of patient care, including breast feeding and immunisation of the baby and liaise with obstetrics on plan for discharge.
12. Prepare patients for, and assist with examinations and treatments.
13. Direct and supervise less skilled nursing/health care personnel as appropriate.
14. Supervise the team in the unit on shift as assigned.
15. Be extremely careful with the disposal of sharps as per infection control & waste disposal policy.
16. Attend scheduled unit CMEs as per the unit standard
17. Mentor junior/new midwives and students in the clinical area
18. Facilitate unit CMEs as allocated
19. Supervise the team in the unit on shift as in the absence of a team leader or senior staff nurse
20. Carry out daily checks on nurses performance indicators
21. Liaise with the infection control nurse concerning infection control issues on his/her unit

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY
• Be familiar with the inventory processes for equipment on the unit and check equipment as assigned.
• Be familiar with ISO standards regarding equipment repair procedures

SYSTEMS/ TECHNOLOGY
• Working use of Microsoft word, Microsoft excel, & the internet
