Background/IRC Summary:
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their lives. The IRC works with people forced to flee from war, conflict and disaster and the host communities which support them, as well as those who remain within their homes and communities. At work today in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities, we improve outcomes in the areas of health, safety, economic wellbeing, education and power.
The IRC was registered in Uganda in mid-1998 and implements activities in the sectors of Health, Economic Recovery and Development, Women’s Protection and Empowerment, Protection and Rule of Law and Education, supporting refugees and vulnerable host community members. IRC Uganda has a head office in Kampala, with field offices in Arua, Kampala Urban, Kiryandongo, Lamwo and Yumbe.
The IRC is currently implementing health and nutrition program in West Nile and Acholi focusing on providing primary health care services to refugees in the settlements of Palabek, Kiryandongo and Bidibidi.
Job Overview/Summary:
The registered midwife shall be responsible for providing direct leadership and guidance to the team in the maternal and child health department. She will be responsible for ensuring the day to day running of the maternity including activities such as education talks to women and their partners in the health facility and in the community, providing antenatal care, delivery, postpartum care, postnatal care, family planning services and shall maintained environment friendly working space hence adhering to infection control and prevention practices. She will also be responsible for providing HIV/AIDS services including but not limited to counseling, eMTCT, EID and HAART services.
Major Responsibilities:
• Work in an integrated manner with other departments both within and outside the facility to ensure provision quality maternal and child health services that include Antenatal and Perinatal Care, safe deliveries, identification and management of obstetric emergencies including making appropriate timely referrals and postpartum care for the mothers and the newborns.
• Actively provide the necessary support supervision of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) department to ensure effective and continuous provision of services to the POCs.
• Timely and complete compilation and submission of departmental reports (weekly and monthly) to the monitoring and evaluation department for compilation and onward sharing to inform decisions.
• Representation of the department in the facility and organization meetings as well as any other meetings where need be.
• Ensure appropriate neonatal and newborn care practices are adhered to including infection prevention, early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding ,immunization ,growth monitoring and and encouragement of safe infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices.
• Implement activities to increase uptake of family planning services and actively participate in counselling and provision of modern family planning methods.
• Provide Health education to clients and their families at the health facility and participate in community activities (Focused group discussions, Dialogues and sensitizations) in collaboration with the community Health Team.
• Management of common Sexually Transmitted Infections in pregnancy according to the Ministry of Health guidelines.
• Ensure non-disclosure of any information whatsoever relating to the practices and businesses of IRC acquired and in the course of duty, to any other person or organization without authority.
• Any other roles as assigned by your direct/technical supervisor
Minimum Qualifications:
Required qualification and skill:
• At least a diploma in midwifery from a recognized institution.
• Must be registered with the Nurses and midwives’ council.
• At least two years working experience in a refugee setting.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including ability to gain trust and build relationships.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, proven self-initiative and problem-solving abilities.
• Good command of spoken and written English.
• Knowledge of languages spoken within the settlement will be an added advantage
