Job Description

Supports the operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of cold rooms, chilled storage, blast freezers, and associated temperature control equipment.

Develops into a safe entry level technician capable of maintaining required cold chain conditions while escalating complex refrigeration, electrical, or pressure system issues to specialists.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Review temperature logs and physically check refrigeration areas to confirm required storage conditions are maintained, promptly reporting abnormal temperatures.
• Observe compressor pressures, temperature indicators, evaporator conditions, condenser cleanliness, fans, pumps, valves, and alarm systems under supervision.
• Perform routine maintenance including cleaning condenser surfaces, safely clearing removable ice, inspecting door seals, checking drain lines, and confirming fan operation.
• Report refrigerant leaks, unusual noises, and equipment abnormalities immediately without independently opening refrigerant circuits or performing high risk pressure repairs.
• Assist experienced refrigeration personnel during preventive maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.
• Record start and completion times, temperatures, and product loading conditions where blast freezers are used.
• Inspect cold room housekeeping, lighting, emergency release mechanisms, floor conditions, and safe stacking arrangements.
• Maintain accurate records of temperatures, alarms, defrost cycles, equipment abnormalities, and completed corrective actions.
• Coordinate with warehouse and production teams to minimize cold room efficiency losses caused by poor loading practices and door opening frequency.

Education Qualifications & Experience

Education Qualifications

• Degree, Higher Diploma, National Diploma, or Diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Building Services, HVAC Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical trades.
• National Certificate, Craft Certificate, Trade Test, vocational refrigeration qualification, apprenticeship, or recognized technical training in relevant technical fields.
• UACE candidate route supplemented by technical training.
• UCE candidate route qualified through refrigeration or HVAC vocational training.

Experience

No prior work experience required.
