Job Description

Supports the day to day operation of the factory wastewater treatment system under experienced supervision. Monitors treatment plant equipment, operating conditions, and discharge quality to assist with environmental compliance. Develops toward routine independent operation through structured technical training while working under senior environmental or engineering oversight.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Check incoming wastewater conditions, tank levels, pump operation, aeration systems, mixers, dosing systems, clarifiers, and sludge handling equipment.
• Measure and record parameters including pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, flow, and conductivity at specified intervals to detect process instability.
• Inspect aeration tanks, blowers, and diffusers while observing foam, odour, colour, sludge behaviour, and other visible indicators.
• Perform chemical dosing for pH correction, coagulation, and disinfection strictly according to approved procedures and training.
• Assist with wastewater sample collection for BOD, COD, suspended solids, and microbiological laboratory testing.
• Monitor sludge handling to prevent overflows, uncontrolled discharges, or unsafe accumulation.
• Inspect the treatment area regularly for leaks, spills, blocked drains, pump abnormalities, electrical hazards, and housekeeping issues.
• Maintain complete environmental monitoring logs, ensuring wastewater is never discharged based solely on visual appearance.
• Liaise with production departments regarding chemical usage, process spills, or high volume wastewater loads that could disrupt treatment.

Education Qualifications & Experience

Education Qualifications

• Degree, Higher Diploma, Diploma, or National Diploma in Environmental Engineering, Water Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemical Technology, Industrial Chemistry, Water and Sanitation, Public Health, Biological Sciences, Laboratory Technology, or a related discipline.
• National Certificate, vocational water treatment certificate, technical qualification, or recognized equivalent.
• Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) in science subjects considered for trainee entry.
• Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with additional technical or environmental training.

Experience

• No prior work experience required.
• Includes a four week onboarding program covering wastewater treatment principles, sampling, testing, equipment, chemicals, sludge, safety, and environmental compliance.
