Background
The New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd is looking to recruit a dynamic, self motivated individual to fill the role of a News Editor. This position is for ARUA ONE FM and the duty station is ARUA. The News Editor reports to the Station Manager.
Job Purpose
Manage the newsroom team to produce competitive radio news within the vision group editorial policy that will keep the target audience informed.
Responsibilities
- Deliver accurate, fair, balanced and timely competitive news to keep the audiences informed by assigning, briefing and debriefing reporters daily.
- Verify news content (script & sound bytes) before it's aired.
- Approve the dressing of the news line up.
- Share news items with other Vision Group platforms.
- Manage general administration of the newsroom to ensure compliance and smooth work processes by holding daily editorial meetings and monthly newsroom review meetings.
- Submit weekly newsroom report to the station manager.
- Manage newsroom staff and freelance reporters to maintain a highly productive team by coaching and training, maintaining high standards (set targets & review), handling grievance and discipline issues, and identifying talent.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the newsroom to ensure cost management by managing budget expenditure on reporter's transport and verifying and monitoring contributor's pay.
- Support Producer of the daily evening news hour (Ebanduun) in order to give the audience a detailed recap of the best news stories for the day in 30 minutes.
- Identify the best national and international stories of the day and give them to reporters as stories for the day and assign the necessary story direction to be delivered.
- Conduct background checks and research on the stories to add value.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication.
- 3-5 years in a newsroom management position in the radio industry.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Technical: Digital Publishing & CMS Mastery (Expert use of WordPress, keywords, and Google Trends / Google News optimization), Audience Analytics (Google Analytics 4), AI assisted Workflow (Using AI for transcription, draft summarization, fact-check assistance, and image generation - while verifying everything), Multimedia Production (Mobile Journalism (MoJo): Shoot, edit video on phone - CapCut, Adobe Premiere Rush; Audio: Basic podcast editing - Audacity, Adobe Audition for news podcasts and radio cuts; Graphics: Canva or similar for social media, thumbnails, infographics, and social cards), Design & Editing Tools (Adobe Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Photoshop, Canva. Creating thumbnails, infographics, and social cards), Social & Distribution Skills (Writing for the web, publishing native for X, Facebook, TikTok, WhatsApp Channels, and LinkedIn - not just posting links), Community Management (Managing comments, verification, and fighting misinformation).
- Behavioural: Excellent Leadership skills, High Integrity, Excellent communication, organizational, analytical and planning skills, Creative and innovative thinking, Quick decision making and judgment, Ability to deliver under tight deadlines.
