Reports To: Senior Sociologist

Job Purpose

To support the implementation and monitoring of social safeguard activities for the SGR Project, including operationalising the social monitoring plan, ensuring compliance with social mitigation measures, and coordinating with relevant authorities for effective project delivery.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

i. Monitoring and Compliance

  • Monitor implementation of social mitigation measures and ensure compliance with approved social safeguards instruments.
  • Track progress of Resettlement Action Plans (RAPs) and Community Development Action Plans (CDAPs) and report on outcomes.

ii. Coordination and Liaison

  • Liaise with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to facilitate effective implementation of social safeguards in accordance with national laws and international standards.
  • Support inter-agency coordination to address emerging social issues during project execution.

iii. Review and Reporting

  • Review land acquisition and compensation processes to ensure adherence to social and ecological requirements.
  • Support the Senior Sociologist in preparing consolidated monthly reports on social and environmental mitigation measures implemented by contractors.
  • Contribute to the review of the Social Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) and Biodiversity Management Plan.
  • Prepare and submit periodic progress reports on social safeguards implementation.

iv. Community Engagement and Support

  • Assist in community mobilization and sensitization activities to enhance awareness and participation in project-related interventions.
  • Support capacity-building initiatives for local communities and project affected persons (PAPs).

v. Other Duties

  • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.

Person Specifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Social Work and Social Administration, Sociology, Anthropology, or any other relevant Social Science discipline obtained from a recognized University.

Experience

  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience in social safeguards or community development on large infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, resettlement, or social risk management is an added advantage.

Competencies

  • Proven experience in community mobilization and designing or implementing outreach and capacity-building programs.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • High level of integrity, reliability, and teamwork orientation.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and report preparation.
