Background
The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) is a limited liability company incorporated in Uganda under the Companies Act. UEDCL owns the 33KV and below voltage electricity distribution networks. The company sales and distributes electricity in Uganda as per ERA License issued on 31 December 2024 covering over 135 political districts, operates a modern pole plant at Lugogo, and executes key rural electrification schemes on behalf of the Government of Uganda.
UEDCL is seeking to recruit qualified, competent and highly motivated Ugandans to fill the following positions;
Job Purpose
To assist in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of electrical equipment in substations, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the electricity distribution grid. The Substation Maintenance Technician works under the supervision of the Substation Maintenance Engineer to carry out routine maintenance tasks, perform basic troubleshooting, and support the operational needs of the substation.

The Substation Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the performance and safety of substation equipment, ensuring the stability and reliability of the power distribution network.
Key Result Areas
- Assist in carrying out routine maintenance and inspections of substation equipment, such as transformers, circuit breakers, relays, and other electrical systems.
- Check and maintain the condition of electrical equipment and identify potential issues.
- Assist in troubleshooting and diagnosing faults in substation electrical equipment.
- Perform minor repairs or replacements of components as needed under the guidance of a Substation Maintenance Engineer.
- Ensure that all tasks are performed safely and in compliance with safety procedures, electrical regulations, and company policies.
- Work in accordance with safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when performing maintenance tasks.
- Conduct basic testing of substation equipment and systems under supervision to ensure proper operation.
- Monitor the performance of equipment during maintenance and report any irregularities to the maintenance team.
- Record and document all maintenance, inspection, and repair activities.
- Report on the condition of substation equipment and any issues identified during routine tasks.
- Provide support during emergency maintenance or system faults, assisting with equipment repairs and restoration of service.
- Help in the isolation and de-energizing of systems during fault rectification.
- Participate in ongoing training programs to improve technical skills and knowledge of substation equipment and systems.
- Stay updated on industry best practices, safety standards, and new technologies in electrical maintenance.

Person Specifications
Minimum Academic Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.
Experience
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in grid operations or power system management.
- Hands- on experience with SCADA and other control system tools is an advantage.
Competencies
- Strong understanding of power system operations, grid dynamics, and load management.
- Proficiency in using SCADA and other grid monitoring tools.
- Excellent problem- solving and decision- making skills under pressure.
- Effective communication and collaboration abilities.
- Familiarity with grid codes, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
- Ability to work in shifts and respond to emergencies promptly.
Working Environment
The position is based in a control room with 24/7 operations, requiring shift work and availability for emergencies. The System Operator interacts with multiple stakeholders, including field crews and other control room staff, in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
