Background

Our client, a next-generation solar company revolutionizing access to clean energy across East Africa with a strong focus on developing commercial and industrial (C&I) and utility-scale solar projects in Uganda, South Sudan, and Zambia is seeking an experienced Technical Lead to join its growing team.

The successful candidate will oversee the full technical lifecycle of solar PV projects—from early-stage development through to commissioning. Ugandan Citizens are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead site assessments, energy yield analyses, and concept designs using tools such as PVsyst, Helioscope, or PVSOL.
  • Develop techno-economic models for PV + BESS and hybrid systems using HOMER Pro and/or HOMER Grid to evaluate dispatch strategies, diesel offset potential, system reliability, and tariff scenarios.
  • Produce single-line diagrams, system layouts, cable schedules, and Bills of Quantities (BoQs) using AutoCAD and Excel.
  • Conduct feasibility studies incorporating CAPEX/OPEX estimates, LCOE, performance ratios (PR), system losses, and sensitivity analyses.
  • Lead interconnection and permitting processes with regulatory bodies such as ERA, UMEME, UETCL, and local authorities; coordinate EIA submissions with NEMA as required.
  • Prepare and manage RFP processes for EPC contractors and key suppliers, evaluate technical and commercial bids, and lead clarification and contract award stages.
  • Oversee HSE and ESMS compliance on-site, ensuring strict adherence to safety and environmental standards.
  • Set up monitoring and SCADA systems, define performance ratio and availability guarantees, and ensure smooth handover to O&M with complete documentation.
  • Support commercial teams by contributing to the technical sections of proposals, PPAs, lease agreements, and customer workshops.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a small technical team, while managing external engineering consultants for grid studies and BESS system sizing.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Renewable Energy, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in the solar PV industry, with a proven track record in delivering C&I portfolios and serving as Technical Lead on projects totaling at least 10 MW.
  • Strong proficiency in PVsyst and HOMER Pro for hybrid PV + BESS + genset modeling, including analysis of reliability and economic performance metrics.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD and experienced with at least one grid or protection analysis tool, such as DIgSILENT or ETAP.
  • Solid working knowledge of string and central inverters, medium-voltage (MV) substations, and BESS sizing and control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in EPC contract scoping, Bill of Quantities (BoQ) development, and vendor due diligence.
  • Familiarity with Uganda’s interconnection and licensing processes and NEMA environmental requirements.
