Job Purpose
To provide support to the Substation Maintenance team by assisting in basic maintenance activities, learning about substation systems, and participating in inspections and troubleshooting tasks under supervision. The trainee will gain practical knowledge in substation operations, maintenance procedures, safety protocols, and fault diagnosis.
Impact
Through hands-on learning and mentorship, the Graduate Trainee contributes to the safe and reliable operation of substations while building foundational skills to become a competent electrical engineer in the power distribution sector.
Key Result Areas
- Assist in routine inspection and cleaning of substation equipment (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, isolators).
- Shadow technicians and engineers during preventive maintenance tasks.
- Observe fault diagnosis procedures and assist with basic tasks such as reading test equipment.
- Help document symptoms of faults or performance anomalies in substation systems.
- Learn and follow electrical safety standards, lock-out/tag-out procedures, and PPE usage.
- Participate in daily toolbox talks and safety briefings.
- Learn how to use tools, instruments, and maintenance management systems.
- Attend internal training programs on substation components and testing practices.
- Record activities in a trainee logbook including site visits, tasks participated in, and learnings gained.
- Assist in updating maintenance records and organizing test reports.
- Work closely with technicians, engineers, and supervisors to support ongoing maintenance schedules.
- Attend departmental meetings and contribute where appropriate.

Person Specifications
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a closely related field.
- Must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized institution
Experience
- No professional experience required.
Competencies
- Basic understanding of power systems and electrical distribution principles.
- Willingness to work in outdoor and high-voltage environments.
- Eagerness to learn, with strong attention to detail and safety.
- Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude.
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain accurate records.
