Purpose:

The Head of IT will lead the strategic planning, development, and implementation of cost-effective technology solutions aligned with business objectives. This role is responsible for establishing IT policies, procedures, and best practices while ensuring secure, efficient, and innovative use of technology across the organization.

Key Objectives and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and execution of short- and long-term IT strategies, focusing on innovation, efficiency, and cost optimization. 
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging technologies to enhance operational effectiveness. 
  • Build and develop the IT team through continuous training, mentorship, and performance management. 
  • Ensure robust disaster recovery and data backup procedures are established, documented, and tested regularly. 
  • Collaborate with departmental heads to address IT-related needs impacting business operations. 
  • Oversee preventive maintenance of IT infrastructure including servers, storage, and end-user devices. 
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the IT annual budget, ensuring efficient use of resources. 
  • Assess user requirements and ensure the IT infrastructure supports business needs effectively. 
  • Initiate, manage, and track IT projects, ensuring timely and within-budget delivery. 
  • Develop and enforce IT policies and procedures, covering areas such as cybersecurity, internet use, and system access. 
  • Plan and execute timely upgrades of hardware and software with minimal disruption. 
  • Implement and manage data protection controls and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. 
  • Oversee the procurement, inventory, and lifecycle management of IT hardware and software. 
  • Ensure consistent system and data security, including up-to-date antivirus protection and patch management. 
  • Monitor industry trends and advise management on relevant IT upgrades or replacements. 
  • Configure and maintain servers, network devices, and user equipment in line with organizational policies. 
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, regulatory guidelines, and audit requirements. 
  • Lead implementation and support of key business systems including O365, SAP, LIMS, Track wise, and others. 
  • Manage GxP and non-GxP system servers, applications, databases, and user access controls. 
  • Ensure cyber security policies are enforced, especially for GxP systems and sensitive data. 
  • Prepare comprehensive documentation including user requirements, system designs, and functional specifications. 
  • Lead internal and external IT audits and ensure adherence to cGMP, SOPs, and regulatory standards. 
  • Coordinate with external service providers and OEMs for escalated technical support. 
  • Provide expert-level support for core applications and infrastructure, offering second and third-level technical assistance. 
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies or processes that offer strategic advantages to the business. 
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning in IT governance and pharmaceutical industry standards. 

Qualifications and Experience Required 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field is an added advantage.
  • Professional certifications such as NSE, SIEMC, CCNA, or NCP are highly desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in IT, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven experience in managing IT projects, including planning, budgeting, and resource allocation.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong expertise in network administration, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data governance.
  • Sound understanding of IT best practices, enterprise applications, and regulatory compliance (including GxP).
  • Demonstrated leadership in building, managing, and developing high-performing IT teams.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities; adept at handling complex technical challenges.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with experience in negotiation, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging technologies in the IT and pharmaceutical industries.
