Job purpose
To plan, deliver and assess competence-based training in mobile phone repair and maintenance, enabling learners to diagnose faults, complete safe and reliable repairs, manage customer work professionally and progress to employment or self-employment.
Regulatory and professional alignment
The post shall be performed in accordance with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Act, 2025; current TVET Council human-resource, registration, licensing and continuing professional development requirements; the curriculum or training package approved for the programme; applicable UVTAB assessment rules and centre procedures; occupational safety and health requirements; and Institute policies. The trainer must remain eligible to train and assess within the scope authorised by the competent regulators.
Key duties and responsibilities
Training planning and delivery
- Prepare annual work plans, schemes of work, activity plans, lesson plans, worksheets, practical tasks and learning materials.
- Deliver integrated theory and practical training using demonstrations, guided practice, projects, simulations and real customer-service scenarios.
- Teach safe diagnostics, disassembly, component identification, board-level fault tracing, parts replacement, reassembly and functional testing.
- Integrate entrepreneurship, costing, customer care, digital literacy, employability and professional ethics.
Assessment and learner evidence
- Prepare assessment plans, tools, rubrics and marking guides aligned to the approved curriculum and occupational outcomes.
- Conduct continuous, practical and summative assessment fairly and maintain auditable evidence of competence.
- Participate in internal verification, moderation, external assessment and corrective action.
- Safeguard assessment materials and report suspected malpractice immediately.
Workshop tools and safety
- Plan workshop sessions and control access to tools, devices, spare parts, chemicals and consumables.
- Maintain inventories, issue records, maintenance logs and damage reports for tools and equipment.
- Enforce electrical, fire, battery, chemical, soldering and personal protective equipment procedures.
- Apply secure data-handling and customer-device privacy practices and ensure environmentally responsible e-waste disposal.
Learner support and industry linkage
- Monitor attendance, participation, progress and conduct and provide timely feedback and remedial support.
- Mentor learners in career planning, portfolio preparation, business start-up and professional behaviour.
- Support industrial attachment and maintain active links with repair centres, suppliers and employers.
- Use employer and graduate feedback to keep training relevant to changing devices and repair methods.
Quality assurance and professional development
- Maintain complete class registers, assessment records, learner portfolios, moderation reports and workshop records.
- Participate in observations, inspections, programme reviews and Institute improvement activities.
- Maintain trainer registration, licensing and continuing professional development as required.
- Keep current with mobile hardware, operating systems, diagnostic software, data security and responsible repair practices.

Essential education and professional qualifications
- Diploma, Higher Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, ICT, Computer Engineering, Mobile Technology or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution.
- Demonstrable occupational competence in mobile phone diagnostics and repair appropriate to the level being taught.
- Basic andragogy training and eligibility for TVET Council trainer registration and licensing.
- A recognised instructor qualification such as DITTE, PGDTTE or an accepted equivalent, where prescribed for the appointment.
Essential experience
- At least two years of recent, hands-on experience in mobile phone diagnosis, repair, maintenance or related electronics service work.
- Evidence of independently completing common hardware and software repairs to an acceptable quality standard.
- Experience maintaining safe work practices, tools, job cards, customer records or repair inventories.
Preferred qualifications and experience
- Experience delivering competence-based training, mentoring apprentices or assessing practical work.
- Recognised assessor or verifier training.
- Experience running or supporting a repair business and managing e-waste responsibly.

- Android and iOS device architecture, operating systems, firmware and common software faults.
- Electronic components, use of multimeters and diagnostic tools, soldering and microsoldering, fault isolation and quality testing.
