This role is part of BRAC International, a leading non-profit organization with a mission to empower people in situations of poverty. In Uganda, BRAC operates through three complementary entities: social enterprises, an NGO, and a microfinance bank. The Production Manager will work for BRAC Social Enterprises (BSBE) Uganda Limited, a for-profit social enterprise that produces and distributes quality seeds, working with smallholder farmers (about 45% are women and youth).

Job Summary

As the Production Manager of the Nakaseke Seed Processing Plant, you will play a pivotal role in overseeing the operational aspects of the farm and lab facilities. The ideal candidate will ensure high-quality seed production and maintain operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Production Management: Oversee all phases of crop production, including planting, cultivation, irrigation, pest control, and harvesting.
  2. Seed Processing: Oversee the entire seed processing operation from raw material to final product.
  3. Resource Allocation: Efficiently manage resources (labor, equipment, supplies) to optimize production and control costs.
  4. Quality Assurance: Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure seeds meet industry standards and customer expectations.
  5. Team Leadership: Lead, motivate, and support a team of farm workers, quality control officers, seed production officers, and plant operators.
  6. Crop Rotation: Plan and implement crop rotation strategies to maintain soil health.
  7. Environmental Compliance: Ensure all farming operations comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations and best practices.
  8. Inventory Management: Maintain accurate seed inventory records and manage storage, packaging, and distribution.
  9. Safeguarding: Ensure team member safety from harm, abuse, and harassment; promote and implement BRAC's Safeguarding Policy.

  • Maintaining consistent, high-quality seed production through all phases.
  • Managing resources efficiently to optimize production while controlling costs.
  • Leading and motivating a diverse team effectively.
  • Ensuring compliance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Production Planning & Yield: Annual production plan generation, seed yield per acre/crop cycle.
  • Seed Quality: Germination rates, purity, freedom from diseases/contaminants.
  • Cost & Resource Efficiency: Resource allocation efficiency, budget adherence.
  • Operational Management: Contract grower management, crop health, production timeliness, inventory accuracy.
  • Compliance & Collaboration: Environmental compliance, cross-functional collaboration, customer feedback.

Decision-Making Authority

  • Decisions Taken Independently: All operational decisions.
  • Decisions Referred to Supervisor: All strategic and financial decisions.

Person Specification

  • Experience:
    • Minimum 5 years in seed production, with at least 2 years in a management/supervisory role.
    • Strong knowledge of seed production techniques, crop management, and pest control.
    • Ability to work outdoors, perform physically demanding tasks, and work irregular hours.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field from a reputable university.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Competencies:
    • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of agricultural sciences, seed production processes, and Ugandan regulations/quality standards.
    • Managerial Skills: Resource allocation, budgeting and financial management, inventory management, day-to-day operations management.
    • Leadership Skills: Strong leadership, excellent communication, and team motivation abilities.
