The British Council would like to offer highly motivated individuals the experiential learning opportunity to gain skills and exposure in international development programming through its inclusive internship programme. The Programmes Intern will support Sudan team, who are currently operating from Uganda due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The role will provide practical experience in programme delivery, stakeholder engagement, monitoring and evaluation, and administrative support. The internship will give the postholder a unique opportunity to contribute to education, English, skills and youth programmes delivered for Sudan while working in a diverse, international environment.The British Council has a Disability Confident Employer status and we look to attract, recruit and retain persons with disabilities within our workforce, to ensure we benefit from their skillset and talent.

Role context

The internship is positioned to support interns from marginalised backgrounds, focusing on persons with disabilities, to gain essential skills and experiences to aid them in securing gainful employment and supporting upward social mobility.
The British Council has been working in Sudan since 1947. Following the war in April 2023, our team has continued delivering impactful programmes through remote management and partnerships. The intern will be part of this dynamic context, learning how programmes are designed and delivered under challenging circumstances, and supporting activities that foster education, English learning, and youth empowerment in Sudan.

Main accountabilities

Programme Delivery Support:

  • Support programme managers in the planning and delivery of Sudan programmes across Education, English and Skills.
  • Assist in the organization of events, workshops, and webinars (online and in-person in Sudan through remote support), including logistics, participant coordination, and preparation of materials.
  • Help track programme activity plans and maintain records of outputs, ensuring documents are up to date.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting:

  • Assist with data collection from partners and beneficiaries.
  • Support preparation of reports, case studies and success stories for donors and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to documenting lessons learned from programme implementation.
  • Stakeholder and Partner Engagement:
  • Support communication with partners, consultants, and vendors.
  • Help prepare stakeholder updates, newsletters and communications.
  • Assist in preparing briefing packs for meetings with stakeholders.

Financial and Administrative Support:

  • Provide support in processing basic procurement requests and financial documentation.
  • Maintain filing systems (digital) for programme documents and finances.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasts and budget tracking under supervision.
  • Collaboration and Learning:
  • Attend team meetings in Uganda and virtual calls with Sudan colleagues.
  • Contribute ideas to programme design and improvement.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities provided by the British Council internship scheme.
