Purpose and Objectives of the study
The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions (KAP) of low-income households in Kampala central division toward the use of prefabricated timber in housing construction. This assessment will inform the feasibility and acceptability of deploying timber-based housing solutions under the Tutajenga initiative, as well as assess households’ attitudes and perceptions toward the use of prefabricated timber as a building material. The insights gained will aid the project partner to craft a targeted marketing strategy and tackle barriers that may hinder the adoption of prefabricated timber as a housing solution.
Study Objectives
1. Identify the primary market for prefabricated timber.
2. Understand knowledge, attitudes, practices and perceptions of the primary market toward prefabricated timber pre, during and post construction of the pilot house.
3. Identify stakeholders and influencing group for prefabricated timber.
4. Map stakeholders within the built environment in Uganda that can be leveraged to influence attitudes, demand and uptake of prefabricated timber from the primary market
5. Identify existing information structures that can influence attitudes and perceptions, promote demand and uptake of prefabricated timber.
Methodology
The study will adopt a mixed-method approach, developed by the consultant to meet the specific objectives of the assignment. The methodology will integrate qualitative and quantitative techniques to capture a comprehensive understanding of households and stakeholder perspectives on prefabricated timber housing. The consultant/ firm is expected to develop a detailed and context-specific study methodology that responds to the KAP study objectives.
Deliverables
1. An inception report (including detailed methodology and tools)
2. Draft KAP assessment report
3. Final KAP assessment report that includes the findings, stakeholders map and recommendations
4. Power point presentation summarizing the findings, lessons, conclusions and recommendations
5. An electronic version of the raw data (anonymised raw data without PII)
Tasks and responsibilities
Individual consultants or Firm
a) Collaborate with Habitat for Humanity for Humanity and partner to develop and validate the KAP assessment plan.
b) Lead the research and be responsible for ensuring integrity of the data and its completion within the agreed upon timeframe and following HFHI’s Data Privacy Policy.
c) Analyze data and submit a detailed report outlining the methodology used, presenting the findings with their interpretations, and discussing the strengths, limitations, and implications of findings
d) Conduct a debrief sessions with the project team to share the preliminary findings
e) Submit a final study report that incorporates insights and feedback from the debrief sessions.
f) Prepare Power Point presentations summarizing the study findings, lessons and key recommendations.
Habitat for Humanity
a) Share relevant documentation for the study, provide strategic oversight to ensure the KAP assessment is conducted and completed as per objectives.
b) Review and approve the study deliverables, providing timely feedback and ensuring quality assurance.
Duration
The KAP assessment will be conducted between October to December 2025. This represents calendar period and not consultancy days.
Budget
Budget allocation for the KAP assessment is USD 6,000.
Experience and qualification
1. Experience in conducting KAP assessments, marketing research and other relevant fields.
2. Have minimum 10 years demonstrated experience in qualitative and/or mixed methods research
3. Strong commitment and capacity to engage staff and partners through participatory and consultative approach in strategy development.
4. Extensive experience in data management and analysis, including data collection tools design, database design and management and data quality checks.
5. Understanding of Market Systems approaches and experience working with housing programmes is an added advantage.
6. Experience in carrying out related evaluations on housing products is desirable.
5. Safeguarding and Data Protection
