Job Purpose
The Graduate Trainee – GIS supports the GIS team in collecting, managing, and updating spatial data. The role provides exposure to GIS tools, mapping, and analysis to support engineering, planning, and decision-making activities. Under supervision, the trainee assists in maintaining GIS databases, creating maps, and learning how to apply GIS in utility management and infrastructure development.
Impact
The trainee contributes to the quality and reliability of spatial data used across departments. Through training and supervised practice, they help ensure accurate mapping and visualization to guide organizational planning, operations, and service delivery.
Key Result Areas
- Assist in compiling and organizing geospatial data from maps, satellite images, or field data.
- Help update and maintain GIS databases under supervision.
- Support the creation of basic maps and visuals using GIS software.
- Learn to present geographic data in clear, accurate formats for team use.
- Help perform basic spatial queries and overlays using GIS tools.
- Learn how different types of data (e.g., land use, population) can be combined to support decisions.
- Assist with technical support for field staff or auditors in using GIS tools.
- Participate in meetings to learn how GIS supports planning and engineering decisions.
- Take part in on-the-job training in GIS software and data management practices.
- Learn about best practices in data handling, analysis, and reporting.
- Support in keeping records of GIS activities and updates.
- Assist in preparing basic reports or documentation of GIS work.

Person Specifications
Academic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Geography, Geomatics, or related field.
- Must have graduated within the last three (3) years from a recognized institution
- Exposure to GIS concepts through coursework, final-year project, or internships.
- Basic knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
Experience:
- No professional experience required.
Competencies:
- Interest in spatial analysis, mapping, and geospatial technologies.
- Basic skills in MS Excel, GIS platforms, or related tools.
- Good analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Willingness to learn and grow in a technical environment.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
- Ability to work in a team and follow technical guidance.
