GAHP seeks a motivated, strategic, and creative Communication Officer to lead external communications related to the Environmental Protection Program (EPP) in Uganda. The key initiatives implemented include:
- Developing a Health and Pollution Action Plan (HPAP): Engaging national and community stakeholders to create a tailored plan addressing Uganda's specific pollution challenges.
- Policy Review: Examining Uganda’s Waste Management and Agriculture Policies, focusing on pollution impacts, Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI), and human health.
- Awareness Campaign: Partnering with the Youth Advocacy Development Network to create a coalition of CSOs to raise awareness about pollution's effects on health and the environment.
- Research Collaboration: Working with the Universities of Birmingham and Makerere to study Traffic Related Air Pollution in Kampala.
The Communication Officer will ensure that reports, findings, recommendations, and outcomes of the various initiatives are effectively communicated to national and international stakeholders, the media, development partners, and the general public through targeted storytelling, press, and digital media content. This is a full-time, remote-based position with some travel required.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communication and Content Development (60%)
- Design and implement a communication plan to support the Environmental Protection Program in Uganda, in coordination with the GAHP global communications team.
- Draft press releases, blogs, factsheets, social media posts, and newsletters to highlight project findings, milestones, and impact stories.
- Support the development of communication products for policy dissemination events and donor outreach.
- Translate technical reports into accessible content for general and policy audiences.
- Manage communication outputs aligned with GEDSI-sensitive messaging.
- Draft, edit, and review materials developed for the Civil Society Campaign in collaboration with YADNET Uganda.
Media and Stakeholder Engagement (25%)
- Liaise with Ugandan media to secure coverage of GAHP activities.
- Identify opportunities for amplifying GAHP's work in national and regional media.
- Support the planning of stakeholder briefings and public events in Uganda.
- Assist in preparing key messages and presentation materials for project spokespersons.
Internal Coordination and Reporting (15%)
- Maintain close communication with the GAHP Program Manager, the Uganda National Coordinator, and the GEDSI Expert.
- Assist the GAHP Communication Manager in related campaigns and provide materials as requested.
- Track communication deliverables and deadlines; report progress to Project Manager.
- Contribute to donor reports and internal updates.
- Provide editorial support for project outputs when needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international relations, public health, or a related field. A master’s degree is an asset.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in communications, media relations, or public affairs, preferably with an NGO or international development agency.
- Strong storytelling, writing, and editing skills (writing sample required).
- Experience translating technical content into engaging materials.
- Familiarity with environment, pollution, health, or GEDSI topics is highly desirable.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and communications platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Canva, social media scheduling tools).
- Knowledge of Uganda’s media and development landscape is a strong plus.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a remote work setting.
- Fluent in English; knowledge of local languages is a plus.
Compensation
- Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
