Overview & Responsibilities
THE POSITION
The Driver will support the Uganda Country Office in providing safe and reliable transport services. Working under the supervision of the Office Coordinator, the Driver is responsible for facilitating the movement of staff, consultants, and visitors while ensuring compliance with traffic regulations and organizational security protocols. In addition to transport duties, the Driver will assist with general administrative support to IDLO programmes in Uganda, contributing to the smooth functioning of office operations.
The Driver is responsible for the following:
- Drive IDLO vehicles for official purposes.
- Inspect vehicles daily and ensure that their assigned vehicle is clean and roadworthy, producing paperwork as necessary
- Keep a record of use of the vehicle, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing, and other services.
- Responsible for day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle, checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and headlights, performing minor repairs, and arranging for other repairs.
- Carry out duties in a courteous, professional, and helpful manner at all times.
- Drive IDLO program and operational staff to and from designated locations in compliance with Ugandan traffic laws, ensuring safety and security.
- Check that the vehicle’s tracking device is functioning properly before departure.
- Familiarize oneself with assigned routes, drop‑off, and pick‑up points before each journey to ensure timely and efficient transport.
- Adhere to the Emergency Response Plan in the event of a road traffic accident or security incident involving the vehicle.
- Keep all vehicle doors locked while transporting IDLO staff and ensure staff exit only at safe and designated locations.
- Coordinate with the Security Focal Point to share relevant security information with staff, supporting safe planning of movements and activities.
- Coordinate regularly with the Office Coordinator to align on schedules, transport needs, and security requirements.
- Assist with general administrative support to IDLO programmes in Uganda.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Job Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess a valid Ugandan driving license with classes B, C1, and D1, with thorough knowledge of road networks, traffic regulations, and key government institutions.
- Demonstrates patience, adherence to traffic laws, and the ability to follow security protocols, with flexibility to travel across Uganda as required.
- Ability to read and write effectively, with strong verbal and written communication skills essential for documentation and interaction.
- Proven experience in administrative or assistant roles, with knowledge of office systems, record-keeping, and general office procedures.
- Excellent multitasking abilities, strong planning and prioritization skills, and a keen attention to detail in a dynamic work environment.
- High ethical standards and integrity aligned with IDLO’s values, with proficiency in MS Office and use of basic office technology.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent; UACE Certificate preferred
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional driving experience, preferably with international organizations, NGOs, or diplomatic missions.
Language Requirements
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of at least 2 local languages is an added advantage.
