Job Summary:
The Environmental Officer will actively monitor, maintain and protect environmental standards in accordance to the required environment legal and regulatory requirements, ISO 14001:2018 requirements and company policies and procedures in Kakira Sugar Limited (KSL) operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Liaise with Heads of Department and Head of Section to ensure compliance of KSL operations to environmental legal and regulatory requirements and coordinate with relevant government stakeholders and communities on environment matters.
- Liaise with the Safety Health and Environment Manager to implement and monitor all KSL approved environmental strategies, policies and programmes that promote sustainable development in KSL operations.
- Coordinate with the Management Systems Coordinator in the sustainable implementation of the ISO 14001:2015 Environment Management system across KSL operations (Kakira and Kayunga Estate).
- Oversee compliance of the environment pollution control equipment with relevant Head of Section i.e. effluent treatment plants, wet scrubber and the electrostatic precipitator.
- Coordinate all aspects of pollution control, waste management and recycling, environmental health, energy use, emissions, biodiversity, water use with KSL operations.
- Develop and forward environmental policies and procedures for management’s review and approval and support implementation with stakeholders.
- Liaise with SHE Manager to ensure SHE costs are optimised to drive profitable growth.
- Conduct in-house environmental audits and assessments and investigate all environment incidents and follow-up implementation of corrective actions.
- Coach, mentor and train staff at all levels in environmental issues and responsibilities.
- Coordinate and manage all environmental emergency preparedness and response program in KSL operations.
- Comply and ensure KSL Safety Health and Environment policies, procedures and practices are adhered to during execution of work activities.
- Prepare weekly and monthly Environment reports for management to facilitate SHE planning and decision-making.
- Support in any assigned SHE roles as required by management and willing to work in any assigned location within KSL or Madhvani Group operations.
- Other Duties: The Environmental Officer conducts similar duties as he deems fit for the proper execution of his duties, and duties as assigned by Safety Health Environment Manager
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
Education:
The Environmental Officer must have a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and Technology / Environment Engineering or a related field.
Experience, Skills and Competences:
Experience:
A candidate for this position must have had a minimum of 3 years of working experience in a similar position in a fast-moving consumer goods company/plantation estate business
Communication Skills:
will need exceptional communication skills in order to effectively execute his duties. These skills will have to be exceptional both in written and verbal form. Communicate with, and relate effectively, to others and Demonstrate resilience and adaptability to change.
Ms Office:
A candidate for this position must be highly proficient in the use of Ms Word, Ms Excel, and Power Point.
Analytical and Interpersonal Skills:
must also be self-motivated, be proactive going beyond the call of duty, have a keen eye for detail, be result-oriented, and have an ability to work stay calm under pressure and in uncertainty inspiring the same in his team.
Knowledgeable:
- Broad knowledge and understanding of local environmental legislation and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
- Be a good team player and Ability to think tactically and creatively Ability to prioritize work in the face of competing demands.
- Prior training on NOSA/ISO 14001:2015 Internal Auditor/Implementor is added advantage.
