Company Overview:
Our client is a commercial agricultural enterprise operating approximately 500 acres in Kiryandongo District. They specialize in high-yield cereal and grain production. Their operation is powered by a core team of 15 permanent staff and a dynamic seasonal workforce of 50 to 300 casual laborers. They operate two distinct farming seasons per year and pride themselves on operational efficiency and agronomic excellence.
Position Summary:
The Field Manager will be responsible for planning, supervising, and controlling all field-level crop production activities. The role ensures that field operations are aligned with the seasonal plan, crop production calendar, and agronomic best practices to achieve high yields, good crop health, and efficient use of inputs. This is a hands-on technical role focused on crop management, soil health, and daily field supervision.
Key Qualifications and Experience:
Field Planning & Season Preparation
- Prepare detailed field plans based on the overall seasonal production plan.
- Allocate specific fields and locations to designated crops.
- Plan field activities to ensure efficiency, proper sequencing of tasks, and cost control.
- Guide decisions on appropriate seed varieties based on season duration and conditions.
- Assess required farm inputs, ensuring correct type, quality, and quantities.
Field Supervision
- Oversee work performed by laborers and field supervisors in line with the production calendar.
- Ensure timely execution of planting, weeding, spraying, harvesting, and post-harvest activities.
- Monitor adherence to field schedules and operational standards.
Crop & Soil Management
- Monitor crop health and identify early signs of pest, disease, or nutrient deficiencies.
- Recommend appropriate crop practices such as mulching, weeding, thinning, and spacing.
- Manage and maintain soil health through proper field practices and input application.
Input Handling & Application
- Supervise and participate in mixing and application of herbicides and pesticides in accordance with recommended safety and agronomic standards.
- Ensure safe handling, correct dosage, and proper timing of chemical applications.
Monitoring & Reporting
- Maintain daily field activity records.
- Provide daily reports to the Directors through the farm’s reporting platform.
- Track field performance, input usage, and crop progress.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Crop Science, Agronomy, or related field.
- Minimum of 4–6 years’ experience in field crop production, preferably cereals and grains.
- Strong practical experience in crop management and field supervision.
- Experience working in seasonal, large-acreage farming environments is an added advantage.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong technical knowledge of crop production and agronomic practices.
- Ability to plan and coordinate field activities efficiently.
- Knowledge of herbicide and pesticide handling and application.
- Good observation and problem-solving skills related to crop health.
- Basic reporting and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work long hours in field conditions.
