Develop and oversee environmental, social, and corporate governance policies to ensure that the company’s social management plans are effectively implemented so as to secure UNOC’s social license to operate in the host communities.

Essential duties

  1. Design, implement, monitor and evaluate progress of the UNOC sustainability management strategy and plans as envisioned in the company ESG program.

  2. Develop and coordinate implementation of sustainable organizational practices/programs.
  3. Define land acquisition processes (planning and implementation) and ensure their execution.
  4. Define and implement livelihood restoration programs for all economically and physically displaced people ensuring that international requirements for livelihood restoration are met.
  5. Implement social studies including but not limited to social aspects of the ESIAs for projects and human rights impact assessment.
  6. Integrate social mitigation measures into social management plans and practices, contractor implementation plans and the project commitment register.
  7. Implement the UNOC stakeholder engagement framework and plan as well as the community engagement strategy.
  8. Define a strategy for engaging with NGOs and civil society organizations and work with the senior public relations officer and senior communications officer for implementation.
  9. Define and implement a social and environment investment strategy, identifying implementation partners and evaluate its performance.
  10. Ensure that all community concerns and issues in relation to UNOC projects are identified, documented, tracked, and resolved.
  11. Research on emerging environmental sustainability issues, concerns or stakeholder interests and advise UNOC management appropriately.
  12. Lead in planning and participate in engagements with key stakeholders such as joint venture partners as well as government in matters related to host communities.
  13. Design and implement awareness programs for employees and other stakeholders to understand the value of host communities; and coordinate activities that support implementation of sustainability initiatives.
  14. Identify, develop, and coordinate sustainability partnerships with relevant stakeholders.
  15. Develop community engagement plans, events and sensitization campaigns and guidelines.
  16. Develop content for sensitization of communities, information posters, packs, and educational materials about UNOC and the general oil and gas sector.
  17. Conduct satisfaction and impact surveys on UNOC’s projects within the host communities.
  18. Procure the services of external consultants with subject matter expertise to conduct in-depth social economic studies and recommend specific projects and interventions to address the various social challenges identified in the social management programs.
  19. Develop and implement frameworks and processes for monitoring progress and effectiveness of the social interventions and projects.
  20. Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor(s).

Qualifications & experience

  1. A bachelor’s degree (Hons) in law, education, social sciences, social work and social administration, sustainable development, community development, or related disciplines from a recognized institution(s).

  2. Masters degree in any of; public administration, community psychology, sociology, social sector planning and management, education, journalism and communication or other related discipline is an essential requirement.
  3. Postgraduate training in a sustainability related course or another relevant training in environmental and social management is an added advantage.
  4. At least eight (8) years of relevant experience in a busy corporate entity of high repute, four (4) of which should have been attained at a supervisory/team lead level.
  5. Experience in monitoring and reporting on social performance requirements.
  6. Knowledge of the oil & gas industry value chain is an added advantage.
