Company Overview:

Our client is a commercial agricultural enterprise operating approximately 500 acres in Kiryandongo District. They specialize in high-yield cereal and grain production. Their operation is powered by a core team of 15 permanent staff and a dynamic seasonal workforce of 50 to 300 casual laborers. They operate two distinct farming seasons per year and pride themselves on operational efficiency and agronomic excellence.

Position Summary:

The Operations Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for the end-to-end execution of farm activities. This is a results-oriented, seasonal contract aligned with the crop cycle. We are looking for a hands-on leader to supervise daily operations, manage a large labor force, and ensure that production targets are met on time and within budget. Successful performance in the first season leads to a priority contract renewal for the subsequent season.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Farm Operations & Execution

  • Supervise all field activities: land preparation, planting, weeding, chemical application, and harvesting.
  • Implement production schedules and operational plans approved by the General Manager.
  • Maintain strict adherence to agronomic best practices to maximize grain quality and yield.

2. Workforce & Labor Management

  • Directly manage permanent operational staff and a large pool of seasonal casual laborers.
  • Handle labor mobilization, task allocation, daily attendance, and productivity monitoring.
  • Enforce workplace safety protocols and ensure disciplined use of farm tools.

3. Resource & Input Control

  • Manage the inventory of seeds, fertilizers, and chemicals; ensure zero wastage and full accountability.
  • Oversee the deployment and basic maintenance of farm machinery and equipment.

4. Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitor crop health daily and report pest, disease, or weather-related risks immediately.
  • Maintain precise daily and weekly operational logs.
  • Support data collection regarding input usage and final yields for end-of-season analysis.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Farm Management, Agribusiness, or a related field (Required).
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ hands-on experience in large-scale agricultural operations, specifically with cereals (Maize, Soya, etc.).
  • Leadership: Proven track record of managing large field teams (100+ laborers) in a high-pressure environment.
  • Technical Skills: Strong practical knowledge of mechanized farming and crop protection. Basic proficiency in MS Excel for reporting is an advantage.

Personal Attributes

  • Resilience: Ability to work extended hours during peak planting and harvesting windows.
  • Integrity: High level of accountability in managing high-value farm inputs.
  • Proximity: Must be willing to reside on-site at the farm in Bweyale.

Compensation and Benefits

Our Client provides a professional working environment with a focus on performance-based growth.

  • Salary: Competitive, based on experience.
  • Accommodation: On-site housing provided (located on the farm).
  • Medical: Comprehensive Medical Insurance (Self).
  • Contract Growth: This role follows a seasonal cycle. Performance is reviewed at the end of the 6-month term with the intent to renew for the next season based on successful harvest outcomes.
  • Supervise all field activities: land preparation, planting, weeding, chemical application, and harvesting.
  • Implement production schedules and operational plans approved by the General Manager.
  • Maintain strict adherence to agronomic best practices to maximize grain quality and yield.
