The Project Irrigation Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and supervision of irrigation infrastructure projects. This role ensures technical quality, sustainability, and compliance with donor and organizational standards, while coordinating with local authorities and communities. By empowering community ownership, strengthening stakeholder partnership, and community ownership, strengthening stakeholders’ partnerships, contributing to donor engagement and drives sustainable impact, drives sustainable impact.

Responsibilities or duties

As the Project Irrigation Engineer your overall responsibilities will be (JDs Key Result Areas):

  • Developed project design, planning and technical support.
  • Strengthened capacity building and community engagement
  • Established strong technical coordination and representation mechanisms
  • Effective monitoring, evaluation, reporting and quality assurance & compliance

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

A successful candidate will have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Irrigation Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, or related field.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, Epanet and other engineering/technical software is essential and Familiarity and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PPT, etc and prepare drawings and Bill of Quantities.
  • Good understanding of climate resilience irrigation design principles and concepts, and use of any engineering applications for design of irrigation systems.
  • Very good understanding of different participatory approaches for household and institutional sanitation improvement

Experience needed

  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience in irrigation projects including technical design and supervision with 2 years in high risks environment/hard to reach locations.
  • Proven expertise in hydraulic design, pumping systems, and managing large-scale irrigation infrastructure projects in both development and humanitarian settings.
  • Strong knowledge of Irrigation sector standards, government policies, and donor compliance frameworks (GoU, WFP, UNICEF, USAID, EU, UN agencies, World Bank) including O&M framework.
  • Proven technical and management expertise in terms of Irrigation project assessments, design, implementation, reporting, monitoring and evaluation and stakeholder engagement.
  • Demonstrated competencies within the Uganda Water for Production sector and experience in facilitating multi-stakeholder processes.
