About the job

About the Position:

DSG is seeking a Project Lead – Renewable Energy to support the Program Manager for Integrated Systems. The role focuses on translating strategic priorities into actionable implementation and ensuring effective coordination across technical partners.

The Project Lead will be responsible for the end-to-end design, delivery, and adaptive learning of renewable energy interventions under ASTYE Uganda. This includes ensuring that all activities are executed on time, within budget, and in line with defined quality standards across all targeted implementation geographies in Uganda.

Key Responsibilities:

Project Delivery and Coordination:

  • Lead day to day implementation of ASTYE’s renewable energy project in line with approved workplans and budgets.
  • Manage and integrate the input of Technical Advisors who will bring relevant expertise from similar projects in Ethiopia and across Africa.
  • Oversee and ensure the end-to-end delivery of the market assessment, site selection, community engagement, pilot installation, and potential scale-up phases.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, budgets, risk registers, and progress trackers, reporting to the Integrated Systems Program Manager on a regular basis.
  • Lead coordination with GOAL and AGRA field teams to align renewable energy pilots with Farmer Production Company formation and mechanization deployment in target districts
  • Manage stakeholder engagement with relevant energy institutions, regulators and local administrators as needed throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage relationships with energy technology vendors, equipment suppliers, service providers, and local government stakeholders.
  • Manage procurement processes in line with Mastercard Foundation and DSG financial management standards.

Technical Oversight and Quality Assurance:

  • Lead the renewable energy market assessment, including identification of the most appropriate off-grid and solar technology solutions for value addition and processing in the program implementation geographical contexts.
  • Review the site selection and prioritization lists for target districts and provide relevant local context which can inform subsequent program activities and schedules.
  • Engage closely with Technical Advisors to leverage the learnings from similar programs in other countries and document the contextual adaptation of solutions for the Ugandan context.
  • Lead the development of quality assurance framework to ensure all energy solutions meet applicable Ugandan regulatory standards and program safeguarding requirements.
  • Identify and manage technical risks, escalating issues to DSG senior leadership with proposed mitigation measures.
  • Provide technical inputs to program learning products, including activity progress reports, case studies, and donor-facing briefs, ensuring findings are evidence-based and clearly linked to ASTYE's work enablement targets.
  • Support the development of a replication and scale-up framework for energy solutions that can be handed over to partners.

Coordination and Reporting:

  • Coordinate closely with the Program Manager of Integrated Systems.
  • Prepare technical updates and inputs to program reports.
  • Contribute to learning and reflection processes.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Renewable Energy Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Business Administration or a closely related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years of professional experience in renewable energy project delivery, with at least 3 years in off-grid or rural energy contexts in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and standard Microsoft Office/Google Workspace applications.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of other Ugandan languages is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, piloting, and managing solar energy systems for productive use (agro-processing, value addition, or similar applications), not solely electrification or lighting.
  • Proven track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder development programs; experience working within or alongside international NGO or development finance-funded programs is strongly preferred.
  • Solid understanding of gender and social inclusion principles in energy access programming; experience designing interventions that specifically expand economic opportunities for women and youth.
  • Strong analytical and report-writing skills; ability to produce clear, structured deliverables for senior leadership and donor audiences.
  • Excellent coordination and stakeholder management skills, with demonstrated ability to work effectively across implementing partner consortia.

If you are a seasoned project leader in renewable energy, driven to deliver high-impact solutions that advance agrifood systems and youth employment, we invite you to apply.
