Vi Agroforestry is a Swedish development organisation fighting poverty and climate change together. The organisation supports smallholder farmer families to lift themselves out of poverty through sustainable agriculture land management (SALM) based on agroforestry. What started as a tree planting initiative in 1983, is today an expert organisation implementing development projects through local partnerships with member-based farmer organisations. Our head office in Stockholm, Sweden focuses on fundraising, advocacy, and programme monitoring and evaluation. The regional office in Nairobi, Kenya coordinates operations, advocacy and expertise. Projects and partnerships are managed by country offices in each country. Vi Agroforestry seeks to conduct a comprehensive salary survey to inform its compensation and benefits structure, ensuring competitiveness and alignment with market practices within the East African region, specifically in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This exercise aims to provide datadriven recommendations to enhance employee attraction, retention, and motivation while maintaining internal equity and fairness.
To achieve these objectives, Vi Agroforestry requires the services of a Salary Survey Consultant to design, implement, and report on a regional salary survey covering peer organizations in the development and NGO sectors within these three countries.
2. Overall Consultancy Objective The objective of the consultancy is to conduct an independent, transparent, and comprehensive salary survey across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and provide actionable recommendations on Vi Agroforestry’s remuneration structure, positioning it competitively within the regional development sector.
3. Scope of Work In collaboration with the Regional Human Resource Administrator and the Vi Agroforestry management team, the consultant will:
- Develop a detailed methodology for conducting the salary survey in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, including selection criteria for peer organizations and data collection methods.
- Identify and engage a representative sample of comparable organizations in the three countries. - Collect and analyze data on salaries, benefits, and remuneration practices from selectedorganizations.
- Benchmark Vi Agroforestry’s current salary structure and benefits against collected market data.
- Provide a comprehensive report highlighting trends, market positioning, and competitive gaps. - Recommend a revised salary structure and benefits package, including grading structures and salary scales where applicable.
- Facilitate a validation workshop with management to present findings 4. Methodology The consultant will: - Use both primary and secondary data collection methods, including structured questionnaires, interviews, and document reviews.
- - Ensure strict confidentiality and data protection throughout the survey process.
- - Engage key internal stakeholders to understand existing compensation frameworks.
- Apply appropriate analytical tools to interpret compensation trends, variances, and market competitiveness within Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. 5. Deliverables The consultant will provide:
- An inception report detailing the methodology, work plan, and list of comparator organizations in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. - A mid-term progress report summarizing preliminary findings.
- - A comprehensive final salary survey report including:
- Executive summary.
- Detailed salary and benefits analysis. - Benchmarking results. - Recommendations for a revised salary structure and benefits package.
- A presentation of findings and recommendations
6. Duration The assignment will be undertaken over a two-month period starting from the date of contract signing, with a detailed work plan to be agreed upon during contract initiation.
7. Profile of Consultant and Required Experience The ideal consultant should have:
- Proven experience in conducting salary surveys for NGOs, international organizations, or development agencies within East Africa.
- Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits frameworks and job grading systems.
- Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and present complex salary data.
- - Excellent report writing and presentation skills.
- - Familiarity with labor market trends and regulatory frameworks in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
- - A track record of delivering high-quality consultancy outputs within tight deadlines.
- Proven experience in conducting salary surveys for NGOs, international organizations, or development agencies within East Africa.
- Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits frameworks and job grading systems.
