Overall purpose of the job.
The purpose of the job is to supervise staff on shift, who are carrying out the water chemistry operations of the COGEN plant so that all the set operational and analytical process parameters are being met at all times. This is in order to ensure that the heat exchange and other surfaces in the boiler, steam turbine, and cooling tower are always kept in a clean and optimum condition without scaling, fouling or corrosion. This will prevent damage to COGEN plant equipment and ensure continuous and efficient operations
Key Responsibilities
• Supervise the operations of the RO plants to ensure that makeup water produced meets the boiler OEM specifications at all times.
• Supervise the preparation and dosing of all dosing chemicals in COGEN and ensure that chemical dosing is not unintentionally interrupted at any time.
• Supervise the water laboratory to ensure that all the required analyses are performed correctly and in the required frequency and the results properly recorded in the required format.
• Interpret laboratory results of all water and steam streams analysed and to take corrective action if and when required.
• Calibrate, adjust and otherwise modify performance characteristics of laboratory equipment to obtain satisfactory operation, reliable and accurate results. Calibration must also comply with any regulatory requirements.
• Prepare chemical solutions or mixtures for use in analyses or procedures to be performed in the laboratory.
• Conduct tests and investigations in connection with operational concerns such as poor water quality and inconsistent analytical results
• Ensure that correct process chemicals are ordered and stocked in the correct quality and quantities to ensure uninterrupted operation
• Ensure that laboratory consumables are ordered and stocked in the correct quality and quantity to ensure the smooth operation of the lab
• Ensure that all operations are documented in approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and these are being followed during operations at all times • Ensure that staff not meeting required performance standards under your supervision are identified and training or otherwise given in order to raise the standards of performance.
• Any other task as assigned by Management
Education:
• BSc. Chemistry
Experience, Skills and Competences:
• 4-6 years’ experience as a Chemist preferably in the Sugar Industry with high pressure (67bar or higher) boiler power plant preferably
• Experience in the operations of RO and Demineralisation Water treatment Plant of 25tph or higher capacity
• Experience in COGEN water laboratory analytical procedures.
• Knowledge in plant operations especially boiler, steam turbine, and cooling tower.
