Critical Care Nurse Apprentice

Specialty: ICU/HDU Patient Management

Duration: 6 Months

Role Purpose

The Critical Care Nurse Apprentice will gain supervised practical experience in the management and monitoring of critically ill patients in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency Unit (HDU) settings.

The apprentice will develop competence in recognising patient deterioration, monitoring critically ill patients, supporting life-saving interventions, and providing safe, evidence-based nursing care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the admission, assessment, monitoring, and ongoing care of critically ill patients.
  • Monitor and accurately record vital signs and other critical physiological observations.
  • Assist with continuous monitoring of patients using appropriate ICU/HDU monitoring equipment.
  • Recognise and promptly report signs of clinical deterioration.
  • Assist with airway, breathing, and circulation management under supervision.
  • Support the care of patients receiving oxygen therapy and other respiratory support.
  • Assist with the care of patients receiving mechanical ventilation, where applicable and under supervision.
  • Assist with fluid balance monitoring, including accurate input and output measurements.
  • Support the safe administration and monitoring of prescribed medicines and infusions.
  • Assist with the care and monitoring of patients requiring invasive and non-invasive procedures.
  • Assist with pressure-area care, positioning, hygiene, nutrition, and comfort measures.
  • Participate in infection prevention and control practices appropriate to critical care.
  • Assist with emergency and resuscitation procedures within the scope of training.
  • Ensure ICU/HDU equipment is clean, functional, and appropriately prepared.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Communicate changes in patient condition promptly to the supervising nurse and medical team.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and clinical handovers.

  • Critical patient assessment.
  • Recognition of clinical deterioration.
  • ICU/HDU monitoring systems.
  • Basic ventilator and respiratory support principles.
  • Fluid and electrolyte monitoring.

  • Emergency response and resuscitation.
  • Safe medication administration.
