Dialysis Nurse Apprentice

Specialty: Renal Care & Dialysis Systems

Duration: 6 Months

Role Purpose

The Dialysis Nurse Apprentice will gain supervised clinical experience in the care of patients with renal disease and patients undergoing haemodialysis or other renal replacement therapies provided within the clinical setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assessment and preparation of patients before dialysis.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after dialysis treatment.
  • Record vital signs and other relevant clinical observations.
  • Assist with patient preparation and positioning for dialysis.
  • Support the safe connection and disconnection of patients from dialysis systems under supervision.
  • Develop an understanding of dialysis machines, equipment, consumables, and safety procedures.
  • Monitor patients for complications and adverse reactions during dialysis and report concerns promptly.
  • Assist with fluid balance monitoring and prescribed fluid removal targets.
  • Observe and report problems relating to vascular access sites.
  • Support the care of patients with fistulas, grafts, and other vascular access devices within the scope of practice.
  • Administer prescribed medicines and treatments under appropriate supervision.
  • Provide patient education on treatment, medication, fluid management, nutrition, and adherence as directed by the clinical team.
  • Support patients experiencing anxiety or distress associated with long-term renal disease and dialysis.
  • Maintain infection prevention and control standards within the dialysis environment.
  • Assist with the preparation, cleaning, and safe storage of dialysis equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate dialysis and nursing records.
  • Participate in emergency management of complications occurring during dialysis.
  • Communicate patient concerns and changes in condition to the supervising nurse and medical team.

  • Renal patient assessment.
  • Haemodialysis principles and procedures.
  • Dialysis machine operation and safety.
  • Vascular access care.
  • Fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Recognition and management of dialysis-related complications.

  • Patient education and chronic disease management.
