Emergency Care Nurse Apprentice
Specialty: Trauma & Rapid Response
Duration: 6 Months
Role Purpose
The Emergency Care Nurse Apprentice will gain supervised experience in the rapid assessment, stabilisation, treatment, monitoring, and ongoing care of patients presenting with acute illness, injury, trauma, and other medical emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the rapid assessment and triage of patients presenting to the emergency department.
- Assist in identifying patients requiring urgent or immediate intervention.
- Monitor and document patients' vital signs and clinical condition.
- Support the initial assessment and stabilisation of trauma and critically ill patients.
- Assist with airway, breathing, and circulation interventions under supervision.
- Participate in emergency resuscitation and response procedures within the scope of training.
- Assist with the management of wounds, bleeding, fractures, burns, and other injuries.
- Support the preparation of patients for emergency investigations and procedures.
- Administer prescribed medicines and treatments under appropriate supervision.
- Establish and maintain appropriate intravenous access where trained and authorised.
- Monitor patients following emergency treatment and procedures.
- Recognise deterioration and promptly escalate concerns to senior clinical staff.
- Assist with patient transfer to wards, theatres, ICU/HDU, or other appropriate departments.
- Maintain accurate emergency department documentation.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, ambulance personnel, doctors, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Maintain emergency equipment and ensure essential supplies are readily available.
- Follow infection prevention, patient safety, and emergency department procedures.
Learning and Development Areas
The apprentice will develop skills in:
- Emergency triage and rapid assessment.
- Trauma assessment and management.
- Basic and advanced emergency response principles.
- Resuscitation.
- Wound and injury management.
- Recognition of sepsis and clinical deterioration.
- Emergency medication administration.
- Patient stabilisation and safe transfer.
