Inpatient Care Nurse Apprentice

Specialty: Medical & Surgical Patient Management

Duration: 6 Months

Role Purpose

The Inpatient Care Nurse Apprentice will gain supervised experience in the comprehensive nursing management of adult medical and surgical patients throughout their hospital admission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with admission, assessment, and orientation of patients to the ward.
  • Conduct nursing assessments under supervision and contribute to individualised care planning.
  • Monitor and document patients' vital signs and clinical observations.
  • Assist with the administration of prescribed medicines and treatments.
  • Monitor patients' response to treatment and report changes in condition.
  • Assist with wound care, dressings, drains, and other clinical procedures within the scope of training.
  • Provide assistance with personal hygiene, nutrition, mobility, positioning, and patient comfort.
  • Monitor fluid intake and output and maintain appropriate records.
  • Assist in preparing patients for surgery, investigations, and other procedures.
  • Provide post-operative nursing care and monitor for complications.
  • Recognise and promptly escalate signs of deterioration, infection, bleeding, pain, or other complications.
  • Participate in ward rounds, clinical handovers, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide patients and relatives with appropriate health education under supervision.
  • Assist with discharge planning and continuity of care.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely nursing documentation.
  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised clinical environment.
  • Participate in emergency response and escalation procedures as required.
