Ophthalmic Nurse Apprentice

Specialty: Eye Surgery Support

Duration: 6 Months

Role Purpose

The Ophthalmic Nurse Apprentice will gain supervised practical experience in the nursing care of patients undergoing ophthalmic assessment, treatment, and surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the assessment and preparation of patients attending ophthalmic services.
  • Prepare patients for ophthalmic procedures and surgery.
  • Verify patient identity, procedure, documentation, and relevant clinical information before procedures.
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative nursing care.
  • Prepare and maintain ophthalmic equipment and supplies as directed.
  • Assist the clinical team during ophthalmic surgical procedures within the scope of training.
  • Maintain appropriate aseptic and sterile techniques.
  • Support infection prevention and control procedures in the ophthalmic environment.
  • Monitor patients during and following ophthalmic procedures.
  • Recognise and report post-operative complications or changes in patient condition.
  • Administer prescribed eye drops, medicines, and treatments under appropriate supervision.
  • Provide patients with appropriate information regarding procedures, treatment, medication, and post-operative care.
  • Support patient mobility and safety, particularly for patients with visual impairment.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and procedure documentation.
  • Assist with patient discharge and reinforce instructions provided by the clinical team.
  • Ensure ophthalmic equipment and clinical areas are clean, safe, and appropriately prepared.
  • Participate in theatre/clinical area checks and preparation as required.

Learning and Development Areas

The apprentice will develop practical knowledge in:

  • Ophthalmic patient assessment.
  • Pre-operative and post-operative eye care.
  • Ophthalmic surgery support.
  • Aseptic and sterile technique.
  • Ophthalmic medicines and eye drops.
  • Recognition of common post-operative complications.
  • Patient education and discharge planning.
  • Safe care of patients with visual impairment.
