Description
For more than 50 years, the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) has been a leading partner to African governments, strengthening their capacity to achieve conservation and sustainable development. In 2020, AWF launched a 10-year strategic vision. AWF is seeking a dynamic and high performing individual to fill the position of Policy Officer. The policy officer will contribute to and the implementation of AWF’s Uganda Country Conservation Strategy with a focus on AWF’s organizational goal of promoting African leaders who drive shifts in policy, planning and finance which leverage wildlife and wildlands as essential to development. This position will also support AWF’s engagements with government and multilateral institutions in Uganda in close collaboration with the Country Director and the Vice President for External Affairs as a member of a global team focused on government engagement.
The policy officer will implement all country level policy related activities with direct support from the Country Director and working closely with the VPEA and team leads in the US, Switzerland, Nairobi (Youth & China). The policy officer will support and contribute to strategies to cultivate leadership for wildlife and wildlands in Uganda, support the country director in integrating wildlife into national strategies, plans and budgets in Uganda. To succeed, the role will have to work closely with all the policy team members, drawing on their expertise in forging national and regional relationships that lead to the desired change.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Action Plan Development & Implementation
• Contribute to the development, review and update of AWF’s Policy and Partnerships Framework and annual plans in close alignment with AWF’s 10 Year strategy;
• Support the development and implementation of a youth engagement strategy for Uganda;
• In consultation with the CD and VPEA provide technical policy guidance and backstopping to AWF partners on a range of issues within national implementation that relate to AWF priorities.
Partnership Development and Networking:
• Working closely with the CD, VPEA and thematic leads, provide support to raise AWF’s image, develop and maintain strategic, informal and formal alliances with key partners in government, private sector and the general civil society;
• Support the CD in the implementation of all policy related processes and engagements in Uganda;
• Support in the engagement of a network of African leaders in multiple sectors who speak out on behalf of wildlife and wildlands and build momentum for conservation as a core pillar of sustainable economic growth in Uganda;
• Support in the engagement of national governments departments to gain support for AWF policy agendas and public funding proposals.
Policy and Advocacy:
• Working with the CD, the VPEA and other key thematic and landscape leads, develop clear, innovative, consistent and coherent messaging for AWF’s policy work in Uganda and; lead on the development of high-quality analysis, policy briefings, recommendations and positions relating to AWF advocacy and policy priorities in Uganda;
• In coordination with the CD, the VPEA and other key thematic and landscape leads, provide inputs to policies affecting biodiversity conservation and sustainable economic development in Uganda;
• Provide inputs and coordination on policy related on private sector engagement in Uganda;
• Contribute to the dissemination of learnings and best practices locally and internationally, to support the building of a regional community of practice regarding multi-stakeholder commitments for biodiversity economies;
• Participate in project regional workshops with the aim to share knowledge and experience and to contribute to the community of practice;
• Support AWF’s policy engagement and influencing work on BE in Uganda;
• Work closely with and provide advice to national bodies and interagency groups that influence national policies related to BE and the overall biodiversity conservation agenda in Uganda;
• Support the CD and project consultants in development of briefing and communication materials including but not limited to webinars, newsletters, presentations, web stories and brochures in line with target audiences;
• The role holder will come in to contact with a wide range of stakeholders and will be required to demonstrate commitment to and a good understanding of AWF’s Rights Based Conservation approaches, values and principles.
Other Duties
• Work with the CD assistant to organize meetings and workshops with Government and partners including the coordination of invitations and logistics;
• Provide input to the reports in external affairs unit as and when required;
• Set-up and maintain database of the Policy documents, businesses, the civil society and other key Policy stakeholders for targeted engagements;
• Carry out other relevant tasks assigned by, and mutually agreed with the line manager.

Requirements
• Advanced degree in Natural Resource Economics and Policy economics, international development or related field
• Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience engaging governments and development partners with specific focus to Uganda
• Ability to collate and analyse a wide range of information to draw out key strategic messages and findings
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to package and communicate complex information across various categories of audiences
• Ability to cultivate and build strong constructive working relationships with individuals within and outside Government.
• Education and demonstrated knowledge of the emerging business environment in Africa and related impacts on natural resources
• Computer literacy to use all MS Office packages
• Ability to work in English and French is highly preferred
• Existing relationships with Uganda government and business leaders is highly desirable but not mandatory
• Advance study of and experience working on development issues in multiple African regions
• Extensive experience living and working in Africa and an ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
• Ability to plan and organize events
• Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to balance competing demands and deliver short, medium and long term objectives
• Excellence in achieving outcomes through partnership and matrixed teams
• A passion for wildlife and wildlands
