The Landscaper maintains and enhances the university’s campus grounds, creating an attractive, safe, functional, and welcoming environment that reflects the institution’s values of stewardship, beauty, care for creation and holistic campus development and sustainability. Reports to the Estates Manager

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture, Landscaping, Grounds Maintenance, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of practical experience in grounds keeping, landscaping, or gardening, preferably in an institutional, educational, or large-scale setting.
  • Must be below 45 years of age.

Personal Competencies

  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail in maintaining high standards of campus appearance.
  • Practical knowledge of horticulture, plant care, soil management, and pest control, with awareness of sustainable and eco-friendly practices.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual labor in varying weather conditions.
  • Alignment with Christian values, demonstrating respect for God’s creation through responsible environmental stewardship and ethical work practices.
  • Team-oriented, with good communication skills to collaborate with facilities staff, supervisors, and occasionally students or event teams.
  • Adaptability, safety consciousness, and passion for creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces that support education and community.

Key Tasks

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing lawns, trimming hedges, edging walkways, pruning trees and shrubs, weeding, and fertilizing to keep campus landscapes healthy and neat.
  • Plant, cultivate, and maintain flowers, trees, shrubs, and ornamental beds, including seasonal planting and mulching.
  • Operate and maintain landscaping equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, sprayers, and irrigation systems, performing minor repairs as needed.
  • Remove debris, litter, leaves, and garden waste; empty outdoor bins; and ensure pathways, parking areas, and sports fields are clean and safe.
  • Assist with landscape design and installation projects, such as new plantings, erosion control, or beautification initiatives for campus events or strategic improvements.
  • Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides safely and in accordance with environmental regulations to control weeds, pests and diseases.
  • Support seasonal preparations and respond to weather-related needs to maintain accessibility and safety.
  • Collaborate on campus sustainability efforts, such as water conservation, composting, or native plant integration, aligning with faith-based care for the environment.
  • Report maintenance issues, hazards, or needed repairs to supervisors, ensuring a safe and inviting campus environment for students, staff and visitors.
