Role Context
The Lecturer in Biology teaches foundational and advanced biology courses, cultivating scientific inquiry, research skills, and appreciation for life sciences among students. Reports to the Head of Department, Science Education.
Qualifications
- Doctoral Degree or Masters Degree with 3 years teaching experience in Biology, Biological Sciences, or a specialized field like Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Ecology.
- Practical experience in biological research, fieldwork, or lab techniques.
Personal Competencies
- Enthusiasm for biology and ability to inspire students through engaging, hands-on teaching.
- Strong laboratory and fieldwork skills, with knowledge of safety protocols and modern biological techniques.
- Alignment with Christian values, emphasizing ethical science, environmental stewardship, and compassion in addressing global challenges like health and conservation.
- Excellent communication and facilitation skills for lectures, labs, and student guidance.
- Commitment to inclusive education and supporting diverse learners in STEM.
- Adaptability to blend theoretical teaching with practical applications and emerging topics (e.g., biotechnology, climate impacts).
Responsibilities
- Teach undergraduate biology courses through lectures, discussions, and laboratory sessions.
- Design and deliver lab practicals, including preparing materials, demonstrating techniques, and supervising student experiments.
- Develop syllabi, course materials, assessments (exams, reports, projects), and grade student work promptly with feedback.
- Hold office hours, advise students academically, and mentor them on research projects or career opportunities in biological sciences.
- Incorporate ethical discussions, creation care principles, and real-world applications relevant to African contexts like biodiversity and public health.
- Contribute to curriculum enhancement, program assessment, and integration of practical skills for employability.
- Participate in departmental activities, such as seminars, committees, or outreach events promoting science education.
- Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated on biological advancements and pedagogical best practices.
- Ensure safe, inclusive lab and classroom environments that reflect university values of integrity, service, and respect for life.
