OVERVIEW

Building Tomorrow, an international nonprofit dedicated to providing literacy and numeracy for all children, is seeking a dynamic, creative, and committed Numeracy Lead to provide technical expertise and project management for a Gates-funded project, Numeracy Research and Development (NRD). Reporting to the Chief Education Officer, the NRD Numeracy Lead will combine strong project management skills with expertise in early primary numeracy, enabling them to work with government partners, technical experts and Building Tomorrow (BT) staff. This position is tied to the NRD project and will end at the end of 2028.

THE ORGANIZATION

Started in 2006, Building Tomorrow supports community-powered learning in rural areas. Through over 650 Building Tomorrow Fellows and over 20,000 Community Education Volunteers, Building Tomorrow has enrolled over 216,000 out-of-school children and reached more than 900,000 learners with our signature Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy camps. Between offices in the USA, Uganda, and Rwanda, Building Tomorrow has a full-time staff of over 350, just eight of whom work outside East Africa. Building Tomorrow has received funding and recognition for its innovative work from Echoing Green, Big Bang Philanthropy, Clinton Global Initiative, US Library of Congress, and Forbes Magazine. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

The NRD Numeracy Lead will be the Uganda lead for the Numeracy Research and Development (NRD) project. They will perform diverse tasks, including materials development, government engagement, and project management.

The NRD Numeracy Lead will:

  • Be well-versed in early primary numeracy pedagogy.
  • Support the development of numeracy materials for P1-3 learners, liasoning with a team of curriculum writers and developing and revising content.
  • Work closely with the Chief Education Officer and the external NRD Technical team on project design and materials development.
  • Coordinate and lead meetings and training with/for government partners
  • Coordinate logistics and procurement in partnership with the NRD Project Manager
  • This position is full-time and candidates should be located in Uganda. This position will require up to 50% international and domestic travel. This position reports to the Chief Education Officer.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE

Numeracy Content Specialist

  • Contribute to teachers and student numeracy materials development
  • Coordinate team of curriculum writers
  • Coordinate revision and editing of materials
  • Coordinate development of training plans for teachers
  • Be the BT lead during training
  • Be the on-ground early years numeracy expert
  • Represent BT at NRD workshops and academic conferences

Government Relations

  • Coordinate and support the agenda for Advisory Group meetings
  • Help facilitate sub-committee meetings
  • Liaise and support district-level leadership, in partnership with Regional Coordinate, when needed
  • Coordinate training for master trainers (government officials and BT Fellows)
  • Coordinate with BT government relations team

Project Management

  • Support logistics and procurement for necessary activities
  • Coordinate with NRD Regional Manager to ensure all activities are preceding as planned in the district
  • Coordinate all needed support from additional BT staff
  • Coordinate and co-plan with NRD MEL Lead
  • Hold weekly check-ins with team
  • Report any challenges to Chief Education Officer and external NRD Technical team

MUST HAVES

  • Bachelor degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Mathematics (focus on early years), or another relevant field.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience, ideally in the context of Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Experience teaching or leading early primary numeracy lessons
  • Demonstrated experience in developing teacher and student materials
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • The ability to work across teams, country offices and with external academic and technical partners
  • Willingness and ability to travel significantly in sub-Saharan Africa, and occasionally outside the continent.
  • Experience working with foundational learning and/or NGOs preferred.
  • First-rate communication skills (in English), both oral and written, with a keen attention to detail, including the ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and compelling manner.
