Job Summary: The Engineering Technician is responsible for carrying out routine maintenance, repairs, and installations of mechanical, electrical, and utility systems within the dairy processing plant. The role ensures all factory equipment operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with industry standards. This is a hands-on technical position that supports daily production activities by troubleshooting faults, performing preventive maintenance, and assisting with equipment improvements to minimize downtime and optimize performance.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Equipment Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance on plant machinery, utilities, and infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and automation faults on production equipment.
- Carry out installations, adjustments, and calibration of machines and control systems.
- Support in maintaining steam, refrigeration, water, and compressed air systems.
- Ensure proper lubrication, cleaning, and servicing of all mechanical parts and equipment.
Preventive Maintenance & Documentation
- Follow preventive maintenance schedules and record all maintenance activities in logbooks or digital systems.
- Report any abnormalities, faults, or potential failures to the Engineering Supervisor promptly.
- Assist in maintaining spare parts inventory and equipment maintenance records.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to plant safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Ensure all repair and maintenance work meets health, safety, and environmental standards (UNBS, ISO, HACCP).
- Report safety hazards or incidents immediately to the Supervisor.
Technical Support & Teamwork
- Assist engineers during equipment installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Collaborate closely with production and quality teams to ensure smooth operations.
- Participate in shift handovers, technical meetings, and continuous improvement activities.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment performance or energy efficiency.
- Suggest practical solutions for reducing breakdown frequency or maintenance costs.
- Participate in basic training and skill development programs to enhance technical competency.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
 
- Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or related field).
- Minimum of 2–3 years of hands-on experience in equipment maintenance within a manufacturing or food-processing plant.
- Experience in dairy processing or fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industries is an added advantage.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong technical and troubleshooting skills in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and machine manuals.
- Basic computer skills for maintenance reporting (Microsoft Excel/Word).
- Awareness of food industry hygiene and safety standards.
- Team player with good communication and time management skills.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and respond to emergencies when needed.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Equipment uptime percentage
- Preventive maintenance completion rate
- Number of breakdowns per month
- Adherence to safety standards
- Energy and resource usage efficiency
