Responsibilities

The Driver operates the university bus and any other units of the University fleet of vehicles to provide safe, reliable, and timely transportation for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across campus, to off-campus events, field trips, or designated routes. The role ensures passenger safety, vehicle maintenance compliance, and adherence to traffic regulations while promoting a courteous and supportive environment. Reports to the Transport Officer.

Minimum Advanced Level (A-Level) education or equivalent.

Possession of a valid driving license fit for a 67-seater bus operation (Class DE).

Must be between 45 and 55 years of age.

Experience

At least 5 years of experience in bus driving, preferably with passenger transport in an institutional, educational, or public service setting.

Clean driving record with no major traffic violations or accidents.

Personal Competencies

Strong sense of responsibility, punctuality, and dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all passengers.

Excellent defensive driving skills, knowledge of road safety rules, and ability to handle large vehicles in varied traffic and weather conditions.

Alignment with Christian values, emphasizing ethical conduct, respect for human life and dignity, compassionate service to the university community, responsible stewardship of university vehicles and resources, and commitment to integrity and peace on the road.

Good communication and interpersonal skills for interacting courteously with diverse passengers, providing assistance and reporting issues clearly.

Commitment to inclusive practices, treating all passengers with fairness, patience, and sensitivity to individual needs (e.g., students with disabilities, elderly staff).

Adaptability to flexible schedules (including early mornings, evenings, weekends, or special events), long drives, and unexpected situations while maintaining calm and professionalism.

Key Tasks

  • Safely drive the university bus on assigned routes, schedules, or charters (e.g., campus shuttles, student transport to events, field trips, or inter-campus travel), adhering strictly to timetables and traffic laws.
  • Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections (checking brakes, tires, lights, fuel, oil, mirrors, emergency equipment, etc.), report any defects or maintenance needs promptly to the Transport Officer or mechanic.
  • Ensure passenger safety by enforcing boarding/disembarking procedures, securing passengers (including assisting those with mobility needs), monitoring behaviour, and conducting emergency evacuation drills as required.
  • Provide courteous assistance to passengers, including answering questions about routes, helping with luggage or mobility aids, and maintaining a clean, comfortable bus interior.
  • Maintain accurate logs of trips, mileage, fuel usage, passenger counts, incidents, and any irregularities; complete required reports (e.g., accident/incident forms) in a timely and detailed manner.
  • Incorporate ethical principles, creation care (e.g., fuel-efficient driving to reduce environmental impact), and community-oriented approaches relevant to BSU communities, such as supporting student welfare during transport, promoting safe road use, and contributing to campus harmony.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies (e.g., mechanical breakdowns, medical issues, accidents) by providing first aid if trained, securing the scene, notifying authorities/Transport Officer, and following university emergency protocols.
  • Participate in required training, safety meetings, refresher courses on defensive driving, first aid, passenger management, and university transport policies; stay updated on road regulations and vehicle handling best practices.
  • Uphold university values by ensuring all duties reflect integrity, service, respect for life, responsible care for God’s creation, and a commitment to a safe and welcoming transport environment for the entire university community.

Additional Notes

Foreign applicants will be responsible for their own work permit and related fees.
