To lead modernization, digital transformation, and strategic management of mechanical assets (excluding road vehicles/civil plant), ensuring safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness in rail operations.

3. Principal Accountabilities & Deliverables

AreaKey Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership Drive URC’s vision, digital transformation, and innovation in sustainable transport.
Asset Management Align engineering with green transport goals (e.g., emission tracking, energy efficiency).
Financial Management Manage budgets, cost optimization, and KPIs for data-driven decisions.
Smart Policies & Procedures Integrate IoT/AI diagnostics, digital documentation, and eco-friendly practices.
Safety & Standards Develop automated safety protocols (remote monitoring, international compliance).
Predictive Maintenance Implement sensor-based systems, digital twins, and lean manufacturing principles.
Team Leadership Train teams on hybrid locomotives, alternative fuels, and performance analytics.
Procurement & Inventory Digital platforms for just-in-time procurement and transparent supply chains.
Quality Assurance Real-time inspections (barcode/RFID), TQM, and Kaizen.
Sustainable Maintenance Retrofit equipment, use green tech (energy-efficient systems, waste reduction).
Innovation 3D printing, composite materials, and R&D for cost-effective solutions.
Smart Operations GPS tracking, automated incident reporting, and real-time train monitoring.
Engineering Design CAD/BIM tools, compliance with global standards.
Reporting KPI dashboards, innovation benchmarks, and environmental performance metrics.
Special Initiatives Decarbonization, cross-border locomotive compatibility, and automation advisory.

4. Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education:
    • Master’s in Mechanical Engineering/Transport Technology/Industrial Systems.
    • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering (mandatory).
  • Certifications:
    • Registration with Uganda Engineers Registration Board.
    • Active membership in IUPE.
  • Experience:
    • 10+ years in mechanical engineering, including 5+ years in senior management (medium/large organizations).
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Power BI, ERP/CMMS.
    • Expertise in sustainable tech (electric/hydrogen locomotives).
    • Leadership in budgeting, change management, and strategic planning.
  • Age Limit: Below 55 years.
