Purpose of the Job
To assist in the provision of effective and confidential counselling services to students and members of staff.
Person Specifications
1) A degree in Applied Psychology or Community Psychology or Guidance and Counselling from a recognized University
OR
2) Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration or Bachelor of Arts or Science with Education with a Post Graduate Diploma in Guidance and Counselling.
3) Three (3) years’ work experience in Counselling services in a reputable Organisation
4) Should have good communication and listening skills.
5) Should have a positive attitude towards people.
6) Should have good interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to relate to people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds.
7) Should be a team player.
8) Should have demonstrable attributes of sincerity, integrity, confidentiality and empathy
Duties and Responsibilities
a) Provide individual and group counselling to help students manage personal, emotional, psychological and social challenges.
b) Assist students experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, grief, trauma or other mental health issues.
c) Offer crisis intervention or emergency support when students face acute emotional distress or suicidal ideation
d) Help students develop effective study habits, time management and goalsetting strategies.
e) Support students dealing with academic pressure burnout and low motivation, and offer guidance on how to balance academic, personal and social life
f) Refer students to appropriate academic support/academic advisor and other University resources when needed.
g) Conduct assessment to identify students’ needs and develop treatment plans, and monitor students and staff who have undergone counselling
h) Refer students to specialists such as Psychiatrists, Psychologists and or Medical practitioners when necessary.
i) Maintain accurate, confidential records of counselling sessions and interventions and when needed, provide reports and feedback to
administration while preserving students' privacy
j) Organise wellness activities, mental health awareness campaigns and psychoeducational workshops to promote positive mental health within the University Community.
k) Work with University Administration, Student Affairs, schools and parents to enhance students' welfare.
l) Stay updated with best practices in counselling student development, mental health and apply this knowledge to work with students
m) Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Key Outputs
i Support in the provision of counselling and guidance services provided.
ii Support for monitoring of status of counselling and guidance clients monitored.
iii Support for compilation of useful information on guidance and counselling for the database and its dissemination is provided.
iv Support for the establishment and maintenance of close working links with academic and administrative organs offering welfare and psychological services provided.
v Sensitization of staff and students on matters relating to counselling and guidance is done
