Background:
URC is seeking an experienced Driver for the Uganda Health Activity (UHA), a five-year program. The purpose of UHA is to support the Government of Uganda’s (GOU’s) efforts to improve health service delivery. The program will strengthen the quality and availability of MNCH, nutrition, and facility-level WASH services as well as health systems and Global Health Security at the regional-, district-, facility-, and community-levels.
Responsibilities:
- Drive project personnel and equipment to locations in Uganda for project activities. Maintain a timely schedule set by program staff.
- Maintain project vehicles, keep accurate records for vehicle issues, including fuel, mileage, and trip logs, and schedule routine maintenance and cleaning.
- Observe all company vehicle utilization policies and in-country traffic laws.
- Perform daily errands such as collecting and delivering mail, making bank deposits and withdrawals, purchasing items for the office, and refueling the vehicles on an as-needed basis.
- Transport staff or consultants to project sites and offices or for the implementation of activities.
- Ensure the readiness of the vehicle, in a good mechanical condition, and ensure the vehicle is prepared for long trips on rough terrain before field visits.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Exceptional knowledge of traffic laws and regulations.
- Understanding of motor vehicle functionality.
- Great professional driving skills.
- Familiarity with vehicle maintenance.
- Ability to work under pressure, driving in difficult weather and through heavy traffic, working on strict timelines, and mindfully acting if an accident takes place.
- Time management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills.
Qualifications:
- A vocational education and a valid driving permit/license are required.
- Certification in a driver’s safety course or other road safety training is desired.
- Defensive driving training with at least 3 years of working experience. Must have experience driving within Kampala and in the regions of Uganda.
- Must be familiar with both local traffic regulations and be able to perform first-line vehicle maintenance/repairs.
- A basic administrative & transport management course.
- A good working knowledge of the English language is required.
