The Gender Officer will be responsible for ensuring gender-responsive and inclusive programming across all EYE-C activities. They will work closely with partners, communities, and stakeholders to mainstream gender equality, promote women's leadership, and ensure safeguarding, and protection mechanisms are integrated throughout the program lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Gender Mainstreaming

  • Lead the integration of gender considerations across all project components.
  • Conduct gender assessments and value chain analyses to identify key barriers and opportunities for women in the Coffee Value Chain.
  • Ensure that training curricula and materials are gender-responsive and inclusive.
  • Conduct gender-sensitive assessments and contribute to program design with a gender lens.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of safeguarding policies to protect program participants, especially young women.

Capacity Building

  • Provide training and mentoring to implementing partners, field teams, and consortium members on gender equality, safeguarding, and inclusion.
  • Develop or adapt training materials and tools to strengthen gender sensitivity in project delivery.
  • Support implementing partners to recruit and engage young women beneficiaries effectively and respectfully.

Safeguarding and Inclusion

  • Work with project teams, the safeguarding officer to operationalize safeguarding policies and procedures across all program levels.
  • Monitor the implementation of safeguarding practices by grassroots partners and provide technical assistance to address gaps.
  • Ensure inclusive participation of young women, especially the most disadvantaged, in program activities.
  • Raise awareness on safeguarding among program participants and community leaders.

Monitoring & Reporting

  • Work with MEL teams to integrate gender indicators and collect sex-disaggregated data.
  • Track gender-specific outcomes and prepare periodic reports highlighting gender achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.
  • Document best practices, success stories, and lessons learned related to gender and inclusion.

Preferred Skills & Competencies

  • Experience in the coffee sector or agricultural value chains is an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in gender transformative approaches.
  • Proactive and self-motivated with strong analytical skills.
  • Commitment to gender equality and women's rights.
  • Ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, and private sector actors.
  • Team player with strong collaboration skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Fluency in English and local Uganda.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Development Studies, human rights or a related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience working on gender, women’s empowerment, or youth-focused programs, preferably in the agriculture or coffee sector.
  • Experience working in rural settings with young women and farmer groups.
  • Strong knowledge of Uganda’s gender policy environment and key stakeholders.
  • Excellent facilitation, training, and interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English and at least one local language spoken in key coffee-growing regions.
